Featurette Project
As a component of Mr. David Garraway's Advanced Television Production class, students were tasked with creating a video promotion for a university department or program. Through discussions with Dr. Rodney Pearson, the Supplemental Instruction program was selected as the topic for the project.

Working in four teams, students used their knowledge of technical and creative production methods to set up and conduct SI participant interviews, run technical equipment, and edit the interviews into a two minute featurette highlighting the Supplemental Instruction program and its outcomes. Each of the four groups submitted their own version of the two minute featurette to SI administrators for their consideration. The project was designed to incorporate skill objectives taught in the first four weeks of class, resulting in a fully produced project that serves a practical purpose. SI administrators will select one video to be used in the Fall 2016 sessions.
Dawn Brancheau Service-Learning Scholarship Highlight:
Madison Buras

Madison Buras is one of our Dawn Brancheau Service-Learning Scholarship recipients. She loves working with children, and, through her service-learning project, is working to educate kids about healthy lifestyles, including the importance of nutrition and exercise. She chose to partner with the Sally Kate Winters Memorial Children's Home to host educational health clinics a few times a month. Her goal is to teach the children that health and fitness can be fun and easy. Madison wants this to be something they continue to do as they get older.

Her first visit took place in January.  She discussed the importance of eating well and exercising daily with the children. Then, the group made smoothies together. Madison laid all of the ingredients out and allowed each child to pick their favorite kinds of fruit and fill a cup with what they wanted in their smoothie. After their healthy snack, everyone went outside to play tag, team races, run an obstacle course, "keep the balloon in the air", hula hoop, jump rope, and bicycling.

Over the next few months, Madison will have similar site visits where she teaches them something about health, shows them a fun, healthy snack, and shows them some fun ways to stay fit and active.
Service-Learning Mini-Grant Highlight: Graphics and Web Design Class

Students from Dr.  Sang Joon Lee's Graphics and Web Design class have partnered with United Way of North Central Mississippi (UWNCMS) to address a need at their organization for website development. UWNCMS's current website has not been updated in a while and their leadership feels a re-design is essential for potential clients and donors.

This spring's class has 30 students and teaches the principles and development of graphics and web design.  Dr. Lee feels it is beneficial for the students to have hands-on web design projects for an organization in need of online presence.  They are working in groups to present United Way with a few different options for their new website. Near the end of the semester, they will pitch their ideas, and United Way will choose a winner. Dr. Lee plans to use the funds from his CASLE Mini-Grant for web hosting fees and stock photos for the students to utilize during the website design process.
