Service-Learning Mini-Grant Highlight:
Dr. Caroline Kobia

Students from Dr. Caroline Kobia's HS 1533: Apparel Design I class designed dresses for a group of girls from the Boys and Girls Club in Starkville, MS.The goal of the project was to enable the students to interact with members of the Starkville community and gain hands on experience with dress production. Each student was matched up with a specific girl and they worked to design customized dresses for their young models.  The student designers measured the young girls and discussed fabrics and colors to make the dresses as personalized as possible. At the end of the semester, the girls attended a fashion show. They wore the dresses constructed by the student designers and had their hair and make-up done as well. They were able to walk the runway in front of family and friends. After the show, each girl was able to keep her dress. Dr. Kobia's students really enjoyed their experience, in fact, one of them said, "My favorite part about this project was all of the hard work that went into making those little girls smile. It made everything worth it."

Sally Kate Winters Service-Learning Scholarship Highlight:
Madison Buras

Residents at the Sally Kate Winters Home observing Child Abuse Prevention month April 2015

One of our Dawn Brancheau Service-Learning Scholars, Madison Buras, will be working with the children at the Sally Kate Winters Memorial Children's Home. She is a senior in Biological Sciences and will be using different activities throughout the semester to educate the children on the importance of healthy eating and fun ways to exercise.

The mission of the the Sally Kate Winters Home has been to offer the gift of humanity, love, and respect to children traumatized by child abuse and neglect. This mission has allowed the program to provide emergency shelter services to numerous children in need of a temporary, safe-haven while permanency was being sought for their lives. Madison believes her service-learning project will go a long way to help the home in their mission. For more info about the Sally Kate Winters Memorial Children's Home visit www.sallykatewinters.org. More information regarding Madison's project will be February's newsletter.
