Stop Hunger Now
Dr. Rodney Pearson assists student volunteers in preparing bags to be sealed and shipped abroad (Oct. 30).
For the second year in a row, MSU students came together in the Bost Extension Center to package over 10,000 meals in an effort to fight world hunger. The meals were packed in less than an hour by over 200 student volunteers, many of whom are True Maroon First-Year Experience students. We are so thankful to President Keenum, Stop Hunger Now, faculty, students, and all who helped make this event a success.

Service-Learning Mini-Grants 2015-2016 Highlight: The Boys and Girls Club Garden
Plans for six raised garden beds, two shaded pavilions, a storage space for tools, and an Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible ramp are under way.

Assistant Professor Alexis Gregory's 4th year architectural design studio students are eager to construct a community garden for the Boys and Girls Club of the Golden Triangle. Along with several other Mississippi State groups, the class will transform the  Club's backyard space into a large horticultural area where members can learn to maintain the garden and take home vegetables they grow. In addition, the in-person time of developing the project parameters will allow MSU students to bond with the Boys and Girls Club staff and create an enhanced design by better understanding their needs.

Funding from the mini-grant will help purchase materials for the construction of the community garden, such as concrete, lumber, and fasteners. The project is estimated to be complete by mid-spring, weather permitting.
Dawn Brancheau Service-Learning Scholarship Highlight:
Lorianna Livingston
Lorianna's plans that were presented to the Boys and Girls Club.
As one part of the several groups creating the Boys and Girls club community garden mentioned above, senior and DB scholar Lorianna Livingston is contributing in the form of Graphic Design. Ms. Livingston will be working with Assistant Professor Alexis Gregory on the design of educational kiosks and graphic design of signage for the horticultural area. The $500 scholarship will be used to acquire materials such as wood for support of the kiosks and paint or wood sealant to make the structures durable over time.

Ms. Livingston, an art/graphic design major from Columbus, is appreciative of the opportunity to work closely with so many groups of faculty and students from all areas of campus.  Most importantly, she is excited to serve the community and complete this project for the Boys and Girls Club.
Service-Learning Library Resource
Ms. Hillary Richardson is the Humanities Librarian in the department of Research Services at the MSU Libraries. Part of her outreach is to serve CASLE as the Service-Learning Librarian, providing research support for those pursuing the scholarship of engagement.

Hillary helped create the Service-Learning Research Guide, which serves to provide research materials for faculty and staff on service-learning projects in a university setting. This guide provides resources that define and explain service-learning, links to funding opportunities for service-learning initiatives, examples of peer-reviewed publications on service-learning endeavors and web and print resources for further research. For more information, please contact the CASLE office or Hillary  in Mitchell Memorial Library.
