Darrell Banks, Choctaw County Extension Agent, shows progress on the 4-H raised garden bed project. A $500 mini-grant from CASLE helped he and the youth make this garden a reality.
Project Goals
The Choctaw County 4-H garden bed project intends to create an opportunity to teach 4-H members about gardening, growing vegetables for themselves or family, making healthier food choices, selling fresh vegetables at the local farmer's market, and giving back to their communities. The program will consist of teaching the basics in gardening and what it takes to maintain plants and keep them healthy. The overall goal is to teach 4-H members how growing your own vegetable garden is both fun and rewarding.
Phase I: Construction & Planting
The six raised-bed gardens were constructed with the help of the Choctaw County Master Gardeners. The 4-H members are responsible for planting the vegetables and maintaining the beds throughout the growing season.
Phase II: Community Outreach
This phase will introduce the 4-H members to giving back to the community in two ways. Some of the crops will be given to needy families in Choctaw County through a local food pantry. Other vegetables will be taken to the local farmers market to sell.
