Welcome back, Bulldogs!
August 2015 marks the beginning of CASLE's third academic year at Mississippi State.  This monthly newsletter is just one way we try to highlight the many service-learning efforts going on throughout our campus, community, and state.

Please let us know what we can do to strengthen your projects and partnerships.  We're looking forward to another great year!

Dawn Brancheau Service-Learning Scholarships
Thanks to the generosity of The Dawn Brancheau Foundation, CASLE has awarded four service-learning scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic year. The scholarship provides an undergraduate student with $1,500 ($750 per semester) to offset tuition costs, as well as an additional $500 to complete a service-learning project.

Members of the Service-Learning Advisory Committee evaluated the proposals received and chose four scholarship recipients in late April. Scholarship recipients are
Brittany Bobo (Union, Mississippi; Art/Printmaking), Madison Buras (Slidell, Louisiana; Biological Sciences), Courtney Fancher (Pelham, Alabama; Animal and Dairy Science), and Lorianna Livingston (Baltimore, Maryland; Art/Graphic Design).  Look for profiles on our scholars and their projects in future newsletters.
Service-Learning Publication Review
Service-Learning Resource

Publication Title: Learning Through Serving: A Student Guidebook for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Across Disciplines and Cultural Communities

Overview: "This is a self-directed guide for college students engaged in service-learning.  The purpose of the book is to walk the reader through elements of learning and serving by focusing on how students can 'best provide meaningful service to a community agency or organization while simultaneously gaining new skills, knowledge, and understanding and an integrated aspect of the [student's] academic program.' Intended as a textbook, the work reads like a conversation between the authors and the college student leader. The publication is student-friendly, comprehensive, easy-to-follow, and full of helpful activities." - Journal of College Student Development
