Spring 2015 Service-Learning Highlight
|
Ms. Cassie Hester's' ART 3913: Intro to Print Production class designed promotional materials for their service-learning partner, Mississippi State University's Crosby Arboretum, a nationally renowned native plant conservatory in Picayune, Mississippi.
The students created designs for t-shirts, buttons, stickers as well as posters for the Arboretum's three major annual events: Forge Day, Bugfest and the Piney Woods Heritage Festival.
We are looking forward to seeing their promotional materials around the state and in the Arboretum's gift-shop! |
Service-Learning Mini-Grants Update
|
CASLE's service-learning mini-grants directly support activities related to developing, implementing, or expanding service-learning opportunities for Mississippi State students or 4-H youth. Service-learning integrates meaningful community service with academic course or 4-H objectives and critical reflection to enrich the educational experience of students and youth to teach civic responsibility, and meet the needs of a community.
We have received twice the number of grant applications for 2015-2016 than for the 2014-2015 academic year. Thank you for your applications. Mini-grant recipients will be announced during our Sweet Success of Service-Learning Reception on April 29th, 2015 in the Bost Conference Center at 2:00 pm. See you there.

Dawn Brancheau Service-Learning Scholar Highlight
|
Ms. Rebecca Herald, one of four 2014-2015 Dawn Brancheau Service-Learning Scholars, has successfully completed her service-learning project. Rebecca organized the first TEAM Fair (Transition based Education and Advocacy), an informational day-long event for secondary students with moderate and severe disabilities. The event provided the youth and their families information and resources regarding post-secondary education, recreation and leisure, vocation opportunities, and independent living. Ms. Herald was assisted by her faculty mentor Dr. Bethany McKissick, Assistant Professor of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education. The vendors present at the event included: the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services, Camp Jigsaw, MSU Council for Exceptional Children, the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic, MSU Student Support Services, Green Umbrella, and others. We are proud to play a part in supporting this important endeavor! |

Service-Learning Project Ideas for 4-H
|

April is Autism Awareness month. Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder, which, per the Center for Disease Control, occurs in about one in 68 births in the United States. People with autism may have difficulty with social interactions, problems with verbal and non-verbal communication, and engage in limited or repetitive behaviors. Some individuals are highly-functioning, and can successfully integrate into mainstream society, while others need specialized help. 4-H clubs can research autism, and conduct a campaign to share what they have learned with other members in their community through social media or a face-to-face program in the public library.

Service-Learning Fact
Results of a Weiler, Haddock, Zimmerman, Krafchick, Henry and Rudisill (2013) study of college students mentoring at-risk youth in a service-learning effort suggest that the participants experienced significant gains in civic attitudes, community service self-efficacy, self-esteem, interpersonal and problem solving skills, political awareness, and civic action when compared to students who did not participate in the program.
