Spring 2015 Service-Learning Highlight
|
Dr. Laura Lemons' AIS 3813: Team Leadership in Agriculture and Life Sciences students have researched and proposed fundraisers to help the Catch-A-Dream Foundation make terminally-ill children's wilderness adventure dreams come true.
Students were divided into groups, and tasked with proposing a fundraising event, one-time or reoccurring, including the focus of the event, timeline, location, and a detailed budget. One of the scenarios will be developed and implemented by the entire class by the end of the semester. We look forward to the final presentation!

Service-Learning Project Ideas for 4-H
|
The year 2015 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a piece of legislation that signifies our country's commitment to eliminating discrimination toward people with disabilities. The ADA Standards for Accessible Design aim to ensure that all individuals with physical impairments can access and enjoy all public buildings and properties. 4-H clubs can research the ADA, and then investigate whether the public buildings and places in their community are accessible to all. If any non-ADA-compliant areas are discovered, the youth can work with their community officials to remedy the problem; for example, the 4-H youth could research and construct a building code-compliant ramp. They can disseminate their findings through social media, and celebrate their project through a program in their school or public library.

Service-Learning Fact
Results of a Chen, McAdams-Jones, Tay, and Packer (2012) study on nursing students suggest that participation in a service-learning project in a community clinic whose many patients were Spanish-speaking immigrants resulted in a significant increase in the students' cultural knowledge as compared with the scores of students who did not participate in the service-learning project.
