Summer 2014 Service-Learning Highlight
Dr. Penny Wallin (College of Education) incorporated service-learning into her EDL 8633 Human Resources Leadership course this summer. The first CASLE-sponsored Meridian service-learning students created guides for the state-mandated Professional Learning Communities (PLC) for three Mississippi school districts. The students were divided into three groups; each team worked on a product for their community partner, including Dr. Joseph White, Superintendent of Forest Municipal School District, Ms. Jackie Pollock, Superintendent of Kemper School District, and Dr. Suzanne Hawley, Superintendent of Quitman School District. The community partners were excited about putting the student-developed guides to good use.
Welcome Back!

Dear Colleagues,

This is an exciting fall semester in the history of Mississippi State University. Our campus has a renovated Lee Hall; our football stadium has a sleek, new design, and we are continuing to extend our research through the Extension Service and the efforts of our students, agents, faculty, and community partners to "extend knowledge, and change lives."

Now in its second academic year, the Center for the Advancement of Service-Learning Excellence (CASLE) continues its work as a joint partnership between the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, and the Extension Service. As such, we promote the MSU mission of research, learning, and service by extending our reach beyond the campus and into our 82 counties across the state.

CASLE provides opportunities for service-learning project development, assistance in preparation for obtaining the "S" or service-learning course designation, mini-grants for service-learning projects, support in finding peer-reviewed publication opportunities or grants for research. We can also help agents develop 4-H service-learning projects, through our service-learning librarian, develop literature reviews or assistance with scholarly materials, and assist community partners in developing service-learning projects.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have about CASLE or about how service-learning can benefit what you do. I invite you to like CASLE on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, or review more information on our website at www.servicelearning.msstate.edu. We look forward to working with you. Here's to another great year, bulldogs!

Learn, Serve, Become.

For the Extension Service
4-H Service-Learning Health-Promotion Idea!

Health is a concern for many families and communities. Missouri's 4-H leaders encouraged fitness and health through a project called "The Couch Potato Challenge". The program guide provides youth-friendly explanations of the link between fitness and health as well as ideas for various activities for groups of all sizes and all ages. These can easily be made into service-learning projects by adding reflection and dissemination components. The youth can keep fitness diaries, involve their families in challenges to get everyone fit, and share what they learn through a 4-H newsletter, website or social media.

Let us know if we can help with creating service-learning projects for the Mississippi 4-H Youth!
