2015 Annual and Measure J & L Pavement Rehabilitation Project

Construction work was temporarily suspended due to the holidays and the rainy weather last week. Weather permitting, Bay Cities Paving & Grading is tentatively scheduled to finish the paving work along Crestview Drive and Donald Drive with the final lift of asphalt this week. Thereafter utility manhole and valve cover adjustments will be completed, along with minor asphalt dike work, and striping. Surface preparation work is also expected to begin along Valley Drive and Calvin Drive. If the weather forecast is clear for 4-5 consecutive days, then pavement pulverization, cement treatment, and new hot mix asphalt placement operations will begin.

Last week all attention was focused on keeping
drains and culverts flowing

In an effort to more fully disclose all calls for service, the Police Chief has reformatted the Weekly Log as noted below.  The new format provides a better overview of all activities involving contact with our Officers, not just the limited categories used in previous weekly reports.  We hope you will find the new format informative. The new format does not include the general locations however, if you would like to see the incident locations, please go to www.crimereports.com and search for Orinda. The data source is updated every 24 hours to capture the most up to date information.

Summer Camp Changes for 2016

The Orinda Parks and Recreation Department is consistently looking at ways to better serve our community. This year staff has focused on revitalizing the summer camp programming in order to help address the need for all-day summer camps and extended care.

For the first time, this year the department has produced a separate Summer Camp guide that will be released and distributed at the beginning of February. Not only will this guide provide information about the City-run and contracted summer camps it will also highlight the new and improved summer camp schedule. The Choose Your Own Adventure camp guide will allow parents to view all camps for all ages in a week-by-week matrix. Parents will search by week and then find the appropriate age to choose their child's adventure.

In addition to this easy-to-plan layout, this year full-time care and programming will be offered from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday for only $330 for residents and $380 for non-residents. Parents will still have the option to register for a half-day only. This is still the same great quality, creative, and fun programming parents have come to expect from the City presented at set, low price fees with care available from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the entire week!

To help parents plan their children's summer schedule, the Recreation and Summer Camp Fair will be back again this year. Parents will have the
opportunity to meet summer day camp staff, specialty class instructors, and learn more about the revamped summer program on Saturday, February 27 from 10:00am to 1:00pm. During the fair, families who register, will receive 10% off all summer camp fees.

Additional information will be available a few weeks prior to the fair.
For more information visit www.cityoforinda.org or call (925) 254-2445.

Instructor Spotlight: Rich Cerruti, Youth Finance

This week, we'd like to introduce you to Rich Cerruti; his new course Finance: Enhancing Financial Literacy for Youth is for children 10 to 14 years of age. This one-day workshop breaks down financial education while keeping the subject fun and exciting. The first workshop being offered is Tuesday, January 19, 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and registrations are currently being accepted.

 1. How did you become interested in what your class focuses on?

I have been interested in this subject since I was a little boy and my first job was a paper route when I was 10 years old. I still remember the joy of opening up my first savings account and depositing the money I earned in tips from the customers.

I have always been interested in the subject of money and my parents taught me well with many of the fundamentals of personal finance which I still uphold today and perpetuate with my 11 year old son and 12 year old daughter.

2. What is your favorite part about what you teach?

When you see the light bulb go off in a child's head when they see how money can powerfully work for them once you develop a disciplined and long term approach.

3. What do you hope students will learn/gain from your class?

We are definitely going to make this FUN with interactive games and prizes. My hope is that each child will come away feeling more interested and energized in developing their own personal finance plan in conjunction with their parents.

4. Fun Facts... favorite vacation? What else do you do for fun?
International travel is one of my favorite things to do in life. I really enjoyed taking our kids to Costa Rica this year as the country has such beautiful topography and an incredible ecosystem. I am excited to go to France for the 1st time in a few months and watch the French Open tennis tournament.

I also enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors and connecting with nature, and I am an avid tennis player.
