Public Works & Engineering Services

2015 Annual and Measure J & L Pavement Rehabilitation Project - Bay Cities Grading & Paving continues to perform extensive utility potholing, roadway coring/sampling, and monument location/preservation on all the roads to be re-paved this year. City staff has been coordinating with PG&E, EBMUD, AT&T and COMCAST on the analysis of the depth of underground lines to avoid damage to utility lines. PG&E started to work on lowering shallow gas lateral lines and will continue the work for the next few weeks. Culvert flushing and pipe condition inspection began and it will be followed by epoxy resin lining of the inside of pipe culverts that have corrosion.

The actual paving portion of the project is expected to start in mid-October, generally progressing on streets from the north side and ending on south side of Orinda. Bay Cities is tentatively scheduled to start pavement work on Normandy and Ridge Lanes the week of October 12th. Subsequent roads will be rehabilitated with streets on the north side of Orinda and progressing with streets on the south side of Orinda. Individual street segments may be re-arranged in the construction schedule due to utility conflicts which require more lead time for the utility company to lower their facility.

Camino Pablo Pavement Rehabilitation - The new signal poles were erected last week.   The final wiring and completion of the signal operation is scheduled to be completed the week of October 5th.
Disaster Food and Water!

CERT Monthly Meeting Notice

Join us on Monday evening, October 12, 2015 at the Orinda Library Garden Room at 7:00pm.

Lamorinda CERT will be hosting their tenth monthly training of 2015.

The topic is "Disaster Food and Water". This will be a replication of the meeting we held in April 2014 but with some different food. We'll start with a presentation by Bruce Macler, a water expert at the EPA who will speak about water supplies after a disaster. After his presentation we'll go outside to the patio where we will have stoves set up to prepare disaster foods. All foods presented have a shelf life of 25 years or more. We'll have score cards for the tasting so you can track which brands you like and which products within the brands are best. We'll collect the scorecards at the end of the tasting so we can tally the results and find the winners.

To sign up to attend the meeting or to get additional information on CERT, click here!
A big "Thank You" goes to the City of Lafayette!  At their recent Food and Wine Festival, "Adore Orinda" bumper stickers were distributed.

In a nod to the Lamorinda area and the residents who Adore, Love and have Amore for this community, a limited number of the bumper stickers are available on a first come basis at the receptionist area of the Orinda Community Center located at 28 Orinda Way.
Planning Department

The next regularly scheduled Planning Commission Meeting
will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 @ 7:00pm

Public Hearing(s) - 10/13
  • 4 Sunrise Hill Road - Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to consider design review and elevated deck permit applications to allow a new two-story, 4,955 adjusted square foot, single-family residence on a vacant parcel.
  • 106 Camino Don Miguel - The Planning Commission will consider an Appeal to the Zoning Administrator's decision to permit grading on a slope greater than 15% for a new rear yard lawn area and new wood retaining walls approximately three feet in height.
  • 89 Dairy Creek - The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to consider a design review application for a new 6,058 adjusted square foot two-story single-family home in the Wilder subdivision.
Zoning Administration - Posted:
  • 185 Camino Pablo - Exception Permit application to build a 289 square foot living room addition at the rear of the house which would be set back 4.7 feet from the side yard. The required side yard setback for this lot is 10 feet. However, the existing house is 4.7 feet from the side yard. The addition would follow the same alignment.
  • 49 Tarry Lane - Proposal to build a second dwelling (994 sq.ft.), which requires the removal of two protected trees (Live Oaks). An arborist report suggests removal of the two trees given their poor health and susceptibility to high construction impacts, which may result from the proposed guest house.
  • 50 Vashell Way - Application to replace two (2) existing 7.1"x 61.0" antennas with two (2) new 7.1" x 72.0" antennas. The application also includes the installation of two (2) RRH-V3 antenna on an existing pipe.

NOTICE FROM PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC

We are performing tree work in your neighborhood.
Please read for more information.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company is currently performing tree work on city property in your neighborhood. Our licensed tree workers will clear trees and brush identified during our recent routine inspection as potentially posing a fire or power line safety risk. This work is part of our commitment towards providing safe, reliable and affordable clean energy to our customers.

Our tree workers perform this work for you
Unless properly pruned and maintained, trees can cause dangerous conflicts with power lines. The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) requires that persons working within certain distances of overhead power lines be qualified and trained properly. There are strict state regulations that dictate the requirements for working around power lines. We hire only qualified power line clearance specialists. Hiring unqualified tree workers can jeopardize their personal safety since they are not trained on the dangers of working near power lines.

What you can expect
Work is expected to begin on September 21 and last until October 31. We will clearly mark all work areas. Please plan for potential minor delays when driving through Orinda. You will see PG&E and our line certified tree contractors on site with trucks and other heavy equipment. Our work should not interrupt your electric service, but we will contact you if there are any changes. Weather and other factors affecting safe working conditions may impact our schedule.
Questions
We encourage you to contact PG&E with any questions at
1-800-743-5000 or email electricreliability@pge.com.

We appreciate your patience as we work to reduce fire risk and
enhance the safety and reliability of our service in your neighborhood.

Community Classes Don't End at the Community Center
Parks and Recreation classes are more than just your weekly class meeting. They provide social connections, creativity, fun, and community involvement.

Recently two classes that are offered through the Orinda Parks and Recreation Department, participated in the Town of Moraga's Pear & Wine Festival held on September 26. Participants from the Ukulele Roots class opened the entertainment portion by displaying their skills and playing charming, casual island tunes, and the Orinda Ballet Academy performed an abridged version of their summer show, Cinderella Ballet.

Joining a Parks and Recreation class can expand your knowledge,

Holocaust survivor Dora Sorell to speak at Orinda Library
Thursday October 22, 7:00pm

Dora Apsan Sorell will speak about her memories and her memoir,
Tell the Children: Letters to Miriam at the Orinda Library auditorium on
Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 7:00pm.

The East Bay resident is one of a handful of Bay Area Holocaust survivors still on the lecture circuit.  Born in Sighet, Romania, Sorell was deported to Auschwitz along with most of the town's 10,000 Jewish residents. She survived the ordeal but her parents, two of her brothers and over 40 members of her extended family died in the gas chambers. She was liberated two days before the end of World War II, and returned to Sighet and to medical school. She eventually moved to New York and practiced medicine there. After retirement, Sorell and her husband moved to the Bay Area to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Sorell's memoir, Tell The Children: Letters to Miriam, is written in the form of letters to her granddaughter. Sorell states "It is important that young people know what happened so long ago, and those who already know should not forget."

Noted scholar and historian Elie Wiesel has said of her memoir, "informative, perceptive and poignant. It's emotional impact is powerful. To read it is to come closer to historical events that will forever haunt mankind's conscience."

Cosponsored by the Orinda Library and Rotary Club of Orinda, this program is free and open to the public. Preregistration is not required. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
