Contra Costa County Community Warning System
The Contra Costa Sheriff's Office would like you to know about the Community Warning System. The Community Warning System alerts people in Contra Costa County to imminent threats to their life and safety. This is accomplished by sirens (near major industrial facilities), radio, TV and cable, weather radios, countywide telephone notification system, cell phone notification service, Twitter, and Facebook alerts.
In the event of an emergency involving hazardous materials, you should shelter yourself, your family, and your pets away from the outside air; shut and lock doors and windows; turn off vents, air conditioners, and fans; and listen to telephone, radio and TV broadcasts for further information.
The Community Warning System has the ability to call home phone numbers in affected areas. You should also register your cell phone to receive calls and text alerts as well.
Please visit www.cococws.us to sign up for alerts and see a current map of recent alerts.

Parks and Recreation
Inaugural Orinda Youth Association (OYA) Team Camp
The Orinda Youth Association (OYA) held the first soccer team camp in collaboration with the National Academy of Athletics on Sunday, August 30. In past years coaches have noted that they would benefit from more on field training because many did not know what drills to run when they actually got started with practices. To remedy this need the Parks and Recreation Department offered a team camp this session to any OYA Soccer Teams. Coaches who registered their team were able to take notes and watch their players participate in drills that the professional coaches from the National Academy of Athletics operated. There were 10 teams and over 120 players who participated in the Inaugural OYA Team Camp. Since the camp was a success, the Parks and Recreation Department is hoping to continue this camp every year.
Co-ed Softball Champs
The third and final softball tournament of the Orinda Summer Series took place this past Friday and Saturday for the Adult Softball Co-ed league. Mangia took home their third championship in a row, 3-peating over the Ninjas who were newcomers to the league this season.

Drug Take Back
The Orinda Police Department is participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) 10th National Prescription Drug Take-Back event. The event will take place from
10am-2pm on Saturday, September 26th
at the Orinda Police Station.
The National Prescription Drug Take-Back addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards. In the previous nine Take-Back events nationwide from 2010-2014, 4,823,251 pounds, or 2,411 tons of drugs were collected.
In addition to participating in the Take-Back event, the Orinda Police Department maintains a prescription drug collection bin at City Hall located at 22 Orinda Way that can be used all year.
The collection bin is accessible Monday through Friday
8:00am - 5:00pm (closed from 12noon to 1:00pm).
