Parks and Recreation
There's Still Time for Summer Evening Entertainment!
Nerves did not get the best of the very talented singers cheered on by their 500 friends and family members at the 10th annual Lamorinda Idol last Tuesday July 14th. With only three Concerts in the Park left, these fun summer evenings are almost over.
West Grand Boulevard will perform a combination of Motown and Rhythm & Blues classics on July 21st. The food for the night will be Street Dogs food truck, as well as Loard's Ice Cream and We Be Poppin' kettlecorn.
The Orinda Summer concert series runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday at Orinda Community Park located at 28 Orinda Way. The last concert of the summer will be held on Tuesday August 11th. The Summer Concert series is sponsored by the Orinda Park and Recreation Foundation and supported by the Orinda Community Foundation.
Movies in the Park continue with the screening of Big Hero 6 on July 23rd at Orinda Community Park. This family-friendly comedy, rated PG, is about Robotics prodigy Hiro and his closest companion Baymax, a robot whose sole purpose is to take care of people. Summer movies begin at dusk and occur every other week concluding on August 20th with the community favorite Frozen Sing-a-long. We would like to thank the Orinda Park and Recreation Foundation and the Orinda Community Foundation for their generous financial support for this series.

City Mulch Program
East Bay Municipal Water District (EBMUD) has implemented mandatory water restrictions and is requiring customers to reduce water usage by 25% from their 2013 usage. In order to meet EBMUD's reduction quota, City staff has identified areas of non-functional grass for removal. The areas which have been or will be converted from decorative grass include the plaza behind the Community Center, underneath the arbors in front of the Library, the grassy knoll at Orinda Community Park just west of the tennis courts, two areas adjacent to Wilder Park Comfort Station #1, and the grass area beyond the outfield at Wilder Park Field #2. The identified areas will be covered in mulch, but will eventually be planted with drought tolerant groundcover and plants. The decision regarding what and when to plant will be made this winter.
Waste Diversion Efforts during Fourth of July Parade
In accordance with the City of Orinda's belief in the importance of waste diversion, our goal is to provide residents with the necessary facilities to enable recycling in our community and around our parks. Though there have always been recycling facilities available during the 4th of July parade, this was the first year that the City worked with Republic Services to track waste. Republic Services contracts with Futures Explored, Inc., a non-profit organization that assists adults with developmental disabilities to cultivate life skills and work-related training. Together these organizations work to provide station monitors at waste stations during special events.
For this event, Futures Explored, Inc. provided six total volunteers to staff each of the six waste stations. Two job coaches were present to help the Team Supervisor manage the workers. With the efforts of Republic Services, Futures Explored, city staff, and event attendees we were able to divert a remarkable 86% of our waste during this year's 4th of July event.

Planning Department
25A Orinda Way (former BP site)
This past week staff met with prospective owners of the vacant site located on Orinda Way across from the Library Plaza. The prospective owners are investigating the feasibility of developing the site with retail and commercial offices. We informed the buyers of the applicable General Plan and Zoning Code policies, and of the importance of this site in the heart of Orinda Village.
Code Enforcement
The County's new Code Enforcement Manager, Joe Losado, met with the Planning Department to coordinate building and zoning enforcement actions and to discuss modifications which would streamline these actions and make them more effective. We shared our goal of achieving code compliance in a fair manner that does not compromise safety, meets the objectives of the community's land use values, is not punitive, and is results driven.

Lamorinda's 2015 National Night Out
On Tuesday, August 4th, Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda residents are invited to participate in this year's National Night Out (NNO). NNO began in 1984 as an effort to promote neighborhood camaraderie, police-community partnerships, involvement in crime prevention activities and emergency preparedness.
Our neighborhoods can join the over 37.8 million people across 16,124 communities from all fifty states, in celebration of the 32nd annual National Night Out.
How do you hold a NNO for your neighborhood? Simply find a host and a location for an outdoor gathering of your neighbors in a setting of your choice. Examples include a block party, pool party, backyard event, potluck, BBQ or ice cream social.
The host should get in touch with their city's Citizen Corps Council (CCC) contact person for more information and support materials such as flyers and questionnaires. Your City contact can also arrange guest speakers from police, fire, city council, and the Lamorinda Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Neighbors can learn about what resources are currently in place and what still needs to be done to keep their neighborhoods and community safe.
Mark your calendars. Whether you are meeting your neighbors for the first time or gathering again for an annual event, camaraderie is important!
For assistance and more information about National Night Out or to get help in organizing your neighborhood event please contact:
Moraga: Diana Graham at diana.graham@comcast.net
Orinda: Patti Young at pattiyoung1@comcast.net
