Public Works and Engineering Services

Camino Pablo Pavement Rehabilitation

The contractor has completed all pavement rehabilitation work and signal loop connections at all intersections. Minor striping will be completed at the intersection of Orinda Way and Miner Road within the next few weeks. The project will then be suspended until late September when the remaining signal pole and signage work will commence; this work is expected to last five to six weeks. We would like to thank everyone for their patience during the traffic delays created by this phase of the project.

Ivy Drive and Coral Drive Projects

The City Council awarded construction contracts to Livermore's FBD Vanguard for the Ivy Drive and Coral Drive Sidewalk projects, and to Concord's Bay Cities Paving & Grading Inc. for the Ivy Drive Pavement Rehabilitation project. Construction has recently begun on both projects. The first phase of each project is to complete the installation of curb ramps, gutters, and sidewalks along Ivy Drive. The next step will be the clearing and grubbing of the frontage along the north side of Coral Drive between Ardith Drive and Eastwood Drive in order to make room for wood forms for pouring concrete.

The roadway pavement along Ivy Drive from northern Moraga Way intersection to the northern intersection of Fiesta Circle will be replaced. All of the existing asphalt will be removed, subgrade surfaces will be repaired as needed, and a 6.5 inch layer of hot mix asphalt will be placed. The work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please expect minor delays or road closures in the area, including some dust and noise from the construction work. These projects are funded by federal grants and local gas tax funds.

Bike Lane Enhancement along Northbound Camino Pablo at

Westbound Hwy 24 On-Ramp

The City recently installed new bike lane striping along Camino Pablo in conjunction with our recent repaving project. The new striping included the installation of a bike lane along northbound Camino Pablo starting at the entrance/exit to the BART station parking lot, extending between a right turn only lane and a through/right turn lane onto westbound Hwy 24, until the intersection of Santa Maria Way. The bike lane was installed to provide more awareness to motorists of the presence of bicyclists in the area and to notify bicyclists to transition from the far right lane to the center lane before the right turn only lane drops onto the freeway. This section of Camino Pablo is a difficult section for cyclists to navigate due to the double free right turns. The City is looking at other geometric alternatives to improve the overall safety of this area with CALTRANS. In the meantime, we are trying to improve the existing safety of bicyclists with the installation of the bike lane.

Staff will be considering further safety enhancements at the next Traffic Safety Advisory Committee meeting on Monday, July 20th at 7:00 pm in the Sarge Littlehale conference room at City Hall. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting to share their opinions with the committee. Staff is proposing the use of dashed green paint within the bike lane to bring more attention to this conflict zone.

Citizens' Infrastructure Oversight Commission (CIOC)

At the CIOC monthly meeting. The commission discussed the residential roads to be repaired in 2016.  The CIOC asked staff to prepare a list of roads to be repaired in 2016 based on the next $6 million worth of roads from the list used to select the 2015 roads. This list was based on the pavement condition index (PCI) data from the 2012 Pavement Management Program report prepared by Harris and Associates. CIOC will review the final list and make a recommendation to City Council at the next meeting on August 12, 2015.

The second item discussed was the input received from the Joint City Council/CIOC meeting on June 12. The outcome of that meeting had been for the CIOC to review and update the current Road and Drainage Repairs Plan, approved on April 22, 2014, and to make a recommendation to City Council. Over the next few months the CIOC will be discussing the plan goals, drainage repair needs and goals, and costs and funding needed to implement the plan.

Fire Chief, Stephen Healy, will attend a meeting at Saint Stephen's Church to discuss the fire and medical emergency services to the Orinda and Moraga communities, and he will address the proposed agreement with Contra Costa County for a new station.

The meeting will be held on Saturday, July 25 from 10:00am to 11:00am.
Saint Stephen's Church, 66 St. Stephen's Drive, Orinda, CA.

Lamorinda's 2015 National Night Out

On Tuesday, August 4th, Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda residents are invited to participate in this year's National Night Out (NNO). NNO began in 1984 as an effort to promote neighborhood camaraderie, police-community partnerships, involvement in crime prevention activities, and emergency preparedness.

Our neighborhoods can join the over 37.8 million people across 16,124 communities from all fifty states, in celebration of the 32nd annual National Night Out.

What is involved to hold a NNO for your neighborhood? Simply find a host and a location for an outdoor gathering of your neighborhood in the setting of a block party, pool party, or backyard event, potluck, BBQ, or ice cream social for examples and have the host get in touch with the Citizen Corps Council (CCC) contact person for their city.

There is plenty of support with materials, flyers, and questionnaires that each of the CCC in Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda can inform you how to obtain and they will also arrange guest speakers from police, fire, city council, and the Lamorinda Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Neighbors can learn about what is already in place and what still needs to be done to keep their neighborhoods and community safe.

Mark your calendars. Whether you are meeting your neighbors for the first time or gathering again for an annual event, camaraderie is important!
