100 Days of Summer, 100 Days of Hope - Blood Drive in June

Summer months are quickly approaching and since shortages of all blood types happen during the summer and winter holidays, the City of Orinda and the American Red Cross are working together, again, to beat those odds.

On Saturday, June 13 the Parks and Recreation Department

will be hosting a blood drive with the American Red Cross.

The drive will be held in the Orinda Community Center Founder's Auditorium

located at 28 Orinda Way, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Individuals who are interested in donating are encouraged to schedule an appointment online though donors do not need an appointment to participate. To schedule an appointment, donors may visit redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code Orinda or may call 1-800 RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Public Works

Camino Pablo Pavement Rehabilitation - The 1st phase of the Camino Pablo project is nearing completion, with the final striping being placed on the new asphalt pavement surface. To improve safety along Camino Pablo, new enhanced bicycle striping will be placed to alert motorists to share the road with cyclists and provide dedicated bike lanes.

Additional paving will be installed in the next few weeks at the Orinda Way and Miner Road intersections to conform to the new pedestrian ramps. Traffic signal loop connections will continue to be installed over the next 7-10 days, and temporary traffic signal timing and sequencing has been adjusted to improve delays during commute hours. The 2nd phase of the project will start near the end of summer when new signal poles and signage are installed at the Camino Pablo intersections with Brook wood Road and Santa Maria Way.

Southwest Area Transportation Committee (SWAT) -  SWAT met to hear presentations on up-coming project planning and requests for funding for the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) and the draft Transportation Expenditure Plan (TEP).  SWAT also heard  presentations on a possible Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) sales tax measure in 2016 and the 2016 State Transportation Improvements Program (STIP). These plans will be the basis for establishing transportation projects in next several years. he Committee also considered and approved a request by the City of Orinda and Town of Danville to reprogram funds from Measure C. Orinda will be using the funds to repair a slide area in the Santa Maria Park and Ride Lot and Danville will being doing Diablo Road circulation improvements.

Ivy Drive Sidewalk and Paving Projects - The City Council recently awarded construction contracts to FBD Vanguard of Livermore for the Ivy Drive and Coral Drive Sidewalks project and Bay Cities Paving & Grading Inc. of Concord for the Ivy Drive Pavement Rehabilitation project. Both projects are expected to begin at the end of June 2015 and be completed in mid-August before Orinda Intermediate School is back in session.  Construction will include the installation of a 5 foot wide sidewalk along east side of Ivy Drive between Rise Ct. and Fiesta Circle (north) and along the north side of Coral Drive between Aridity Dr. and Eastwood Dr.  In addition the roadway pavement along Ivy Drive from northern Moraga Way intersection to the northern intersection of Fiesta Circle will be replaced. All of the existing asphalt will be removed, and subgrade surface will be repaired as needed, then a 6.5 inch layer of hot mix asphalt will be placed.

The work hours will be Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please expect minor delays or closures in the area, including some dust and noise from the construction work.

Protecting the Swallows of Orinda

The East Bay offers easy access to so many wonders of wilderness. Here in Orinda, we're fortunate to have a colony of Cliff Swallows that return each spring to breed and raise young at Wilder Park. In California, Cliff Swallows usually begin to arrive in late March and may remain until September.

Swallows are migratory sparrow-sized birds with long, pointed wings and streamlined bodies developed for fast acrobatic flight. At Wilder, you can see them swooping and flying over fields, ponds, and anywhere else with an abundance of flying insects. Swallows consume large quantities of insects including mosquitos and other harmful insects so people benefit from sharing the environment with these birds.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Please be aware that Swallows and their nests are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. It is illegal to intentionally kill, injure, take, or sell them or to intentionally destroy the nest, eggs, or young without a permit. A completed nest cannot be touched without a permit issued by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
