Orinda receives Certificate of Achievement for Excellence!!
On April 9, 2015, the City received notification from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) that the City's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) qualified for a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence!! "The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management."
Upon hearing of the award, Susan credited support from City Manager, Janet Keeter and her Finance Department team; Norma Costa, Jennie Flores and Linda Thompson for the achievement. This is the City's first Government Finance Officers Association award and it is very difficult to attain.
Congratulations to Susan and the Finance Department team!!

Public Works and Engineering Services
Camino Pablo Pavement Rehabilitation - This past week Ghilotti Bros. demolished and reconstructed several concrete driveways and pedestrian ramps to upgrade them to ADA standards. This concrete work will continue into next week. The major pavement rehabilitation work will likely begin either Saturday April 25th or May 2nd when Ghilotti Bros. begins grinding out and removing the top 3 inches of the existing asphalt pavement. This work is being tentatively scheduled for the weekend to maximize the working hours for the grinding operation. There will be lane closures along Camino Pablo which will limit traffic to one lane in each direction between Moraga Way and Miner Road; and one way reversing traffic control between Miner Road and North Lane. In addition, Brookwood Road between Moraga Way and Camino Pablo will be fully closed for several hours on that Saturday morning. Detours will be established to direct drivers around to Moraga Way to access the downtown area.

From the Desk of Chief Nagel
In the past two months, the Police Department has received reports of numerous vehicle and residential burglaries throughout Orinda. When looking at last year's statistics, the summer months spiked with residential burglaries and property crimes. I would like to take this opportunity to revisit the actions you can take to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of these property crimes.
Vehicle burglary is a crime of opportunity. Remember, they steal first and evaluate the stolen items value later. Thieves will smash a car window just to look inside a bag, backpack, briefcase or box to see if there is anything of value. Frequently the item will have no value and really not mean anything, but you will be left with a broken window or door lock. You can outsmart/prevent the car thief by following the tips below:
- Don't leave anything on display in your car. Even an old coat on the back seat is a temptation.
- Take all of your belongings with you when you leave the car. If you don't, lock them in the trunk.
- Be mindful of what you leave on display on the dashboard or in the car such as:
- Cell Phones, GPS, Laptops and IPhone/IPad
- Checkbooks, Credit Cards
- Cash (even loose change)
- Vehicle Registration Documents
- Private Mail
- Wallets and Purses
- Garage Door Activators
Don't make the mistake of thinking because you live in a low-crime neighborhood, that you can leave items in your car. Thieves know to cruise "nice" neighborhoods because that's where the good stuff can be found. When parking your car, try to consider the location. I know at times parking might be limited for various reasons, but consider the area. Thieves always like to steal from cars parked in places where they run the least risk of being seen. Is the car concealed from public view? Are you parked in between trucks or other large vehicles which block the view of your car?
The Orinda Police Department has a comprehensive do-it-yourself home safety guide available on the website or at City Hall. The guide provides tips and recommendations when it comes to securing your home and personal safety.
As always, if you see anyone peering into car windows or are making an extra effort to not be seen near homes, please call the Police Department immediately at 925-646-2441.

Pine Grove Playground
The City Council experienced why parks make life better this week during the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Pine Grove playground. Council members tested out some of the equipment prior to cutting the ribbon on Tuesday. The playground, which officially opened the beginning of February, is designed for children 5 to 12 years of age and features a challenge-based design which incorporates different climbing features. The City is pleased to have an additional playground for our community to enjoy.

When is Bike to Work Day?
The San Francisco Bay Area's 21st annual Bike to Work Day will take place on Thursday, May 14, 2015 with all nine Bay Area counties participating in the celebration. The event is part of National Bike Month.
What Happens on Bike to Work Day?
Energizer Stations are located along Bay Area county commute routes where bicyclists can stop for refreshments, giveaways, and bicycling information or simply to be 'cheered on' by fellow participants. Energizer Stations will be open during morning commute hours and some will even re-open during the evening commute. Stay tuned for updated information about Energizer Station locations, Bike to Work Week activities and Bike to Work Day "after parties."
Why Bike to Work?
More than one million Bay Area residents live within five miles of their workplace, an ideal distance for bicycling. The work commute only represents 23% of all trips, so consider how you also may be able to bike to shop, to school, for errands, and for social events. In a world concerned with climate change, pollution, congestion and wasted time, the question should really be: Why not bike to work?
How many people in the Bay Area commute to work by bike every day?
According to the 2013 American Community Survey, over 62,000 Bay Area residents use a bicycle as their primary means of getting to work every day. On Bike to Work Day, we expect tens of thousands of people to bike to work in the Bay Area - with many being first-time bike commuters.
Do I need to register for Bike to Work Day?
Registration is free, quick and easy. You don't need to register, but the only way to win awesome prizes is to pledge to ride. By registering you will be making a pledge to Bike to Work, allowing the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition to better calculate participation. When you register, you will automatically be entered into a drawing to win a grand prize.
Only Bay Area Residents (residents of any of the Bay Area's 9 official government counties)
will be qualified to win prizes.
The City of Orinda sponsors an Energizer Station that will be located at the foot of the St Stephen's trail at the intersection of Bryant Way and Davis Road. The station will be open 6:30AM - 8:00PM. Stop by for energizing treats and bicycle goodies!
