Basketball Season is Back

January marks the beginning of Orinda Youth Association (OYA) Basketball. The OYA Basketball program is broken up into two leagues, the Developmental League and the Advanced League. The Developmental League is a Saturday-only-program for Kindergarten and 1st graders that consists of a 30 minute practice followed by a 30 minute game, and seeks to introduce the basic rules and fundamental skills to beginning players. The Advanced League consists of one practice and one game per week, and is designed for the players to apply the skills they have been developing in actual game play. This season we have 395 participants ages 4-10 in our program, which is a 20% increase over last year.

New this year, OYA is partnering with Alpha Basketball as part of a trial offering coaching materials to all of our 2nd and 3rd grade volunteer coaches. Each week coaches receive an email from Alpha Basketball with a grade specific practice plan. Each drill listed in the plan is clickable and linked to video demonstration and commentary through the Alpha Basketball Vimeo site. So far we have gotten great feedback from our coaches and plan on expanding the program to all levels next year. To learn more about Alpha Basketball  click here.

Contra Costa County Library

This past November and December Lamorinda residents participated in the County wide project, War Comes Home. Bringing together film, books and author appearances this project struck a chord with many. Perhaps you were one of the hundreds who participated either by attending the documentary film showing of Chosin at the Orinda Theatre on November 12, or who read the book Until Tuesday and came to hear the author, Luis Carlos Montalvan and his service dog Tuesday, present their moving story at the Lafayette Library on Tuesday, December 2. If you did participate in any way, please consider going to this link and filling out a brief online survey:

This survey is on behalf of California Humanities, one of the underwriters of this project.
