Planning Department
Housing Element Draft EIR
The Planning Department and the City's Housing Element consultant, PMC have completed the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR). The document was released for public review on October 17, 2014. On November 5, 2014, during the 45-day public review and comment period, the City Council will hold a public meeting on the Draft document. After receiving a recommendation from the Planning Commission, the City Council will select a site(s) to accommodate the Regional Housing Needs Allocation and approve a draft Housing Element update for review by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). As a reminder, the City's mandated role is to establish the rules for development of housing consistent with state law. It is up to private property owners to decide whether or not to develop their property. To comply with deadlines of state law, HCD review of the Draft Housing Element will need to commence by mid-December.

Drop, Cover, and Hold!
On Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 9:00am, the City of Orinda participated in the Shakeout Drill where a large earthquake was simulated to occur in the Bay Area affecting Orinda. City officials responded to City Hall and activated the Emergency Operations Center. In conjunction with MOFD, Lafayette and Moraga, we established communications with other Emergency Operations Centers and proceeded to address the "damage." This included blocked roads, fallen trees and power lines, structure fires, evacuated schools, broken water lines, buildings off foundations, establishing evacuation locations and working with the media. Valuable lessons were learned and all those involved appreciated the experience and feel a little better prepared for when an actual disaster will occur.

FYI - Earthquake Myth: An enduring earthquake image of California is a collapsed adobe home with the doorframe as the only standing part. From this came our belief that a doorway is the safest place to be during an earthquake. True - if you live in an old, unreinforced adobe house. In modern houses, doorways are no stronger than any other part of the house. You are safer under a table.
