 Emergency Preparedness
The City of Orinda is responsible for providing emergency operations and response to our citizens in the event of natural or man-made disasters. This includes protecting the health and safety of citizens and the preservation of lives, property and the environment from the effects of the emergency. Local government agencies in the Lamorinda area have developed plans and are maintaining appropriate levels of readiness for disaster preparedness. The City's Emergency Operations plan is tested annually by activating the Emergency Operations Center and utilizing hands-on exercises to simulate an emergency and working to obtain, schedule and disperse resources to each community as needed. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for Orinda is located at City Hall. In addition, the City works with the Red Cross to identify shelters and to assign evacuation centers based on the location of the disaster. The Red Cross recommends that each family have a Disaster Preparedness Plan in place for making sure you are able to contact and find one another. Click Here to go to the Red Cross website for more information.

From the Desk of Orinda Police Chief Nagel

It is the time of year when our children head back to school. As children travel to and from school via bus, car, bike or walking, please try to keep in mind these safety tips while driving through the City.
Pedestrians
Pedestrians have the right of way at all intersections. Drivers should not block the crosswalk when stopped at a light or waiting to make a turn as it could force pedestrians in a dangerous situation walking around a car. In a school zone, when warning flashers are blinking, you must stop to yield to pedestrians crossing the roadway in a crosswalk or at an intersection with no markings. Finally, always stop when directed by a school patrol sign, school patrol officer or designated crossing guard.
Bicyclists
Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other roadway users and frequently share the same lane. When passing a bicyclist leave at least 3 feet between you and the bicycle.
School Buses
It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. This applies to all directions of traffic including the opposite lane. Please be alert as children are unpredictable and can run into traffic from the front or rear of the bus. Never pass a school bus on the right.
Child Booster and Safety Seats
Children under the age of 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat. Children under the age of 8 who are 4' 9" or taller may be secured by a safety belt in the back seat. Children who are 8 years and over shall be properly secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint system or safety belt. Passengers who are 16 years of age and over are subject to California's Mandatory Seat Belt law.
Finally, specific to Orinda, every school year turn restriction signs are placed on Moraga Way, and removed during the summer. The signs were installed Friday, August 22, 2014 and are located at:
Ivy Drive (North End) - Southbound no left
Southwaite Court - Southbound no left
Whitehall Drive - Southbound no left
Estabueno Drive - Southbound no right
Lavenida Drive - Southbound no right

Community Policing
On Thursday, August 21st, The Orinda Police Department participated in the annual OIS barbecue at Orinda Intermediate School serving approximately 300 students delicious barbecued hot dogs. Members of the Orinda Police Department and Orinda Public Works rolled out a large barbecue in the morning and set up a well-organized cooking machine. All of the cooks were grateful we did not have a scorching summer day as the barbecue certainly provided enough heat. This was a great opportunity for the students and staff to meet the officers and provide an opportunity to ask questions or simply say "Hello."

Police Department staff and other participants mentioned how much fun they had during this event and look forward to next year's barbecue!
