National Public Works Week
May 18 - 24, 2014
In honor of National Public Works Week May 18-24, 2014, Public Works staff were presented with a proclamation from the Mayor at the May 6, 2014 City Council meeting. Instituted as a public education campaign by the American Public Works Association (APWA) in 1960, National Public Works Week calls attention to the importance of public works in community life. The Orinda Public Works Department consists of dedicated staff who work to maintain the City's infrastructure as best as can be done with limited resources. Public Works and Engineering staff are tasked with pavement maintenance, drainage maintenance, routine maintenance, traffic management, capital improvements and development engineering.
A resounding Thank You to our Public Works staff!

Parks and Recreation
Early Registration Deadline for Fall Soccer is June 1
Fall Soccer is around the corner and the early registration period ends on June 1. By registering early, parents pay a lower fee and ensure that their child gets on a team with at least one requested friend. This year we have updated our age divisions to match the standards set by the USA Youth Soccer Guidelines, decrease potential injuries, and increase competitive balance. We have also reformatted the structure of our leagues to now feature small sided games. Small sided games create more touches for each player and help to foster their development as soccer players. To register visit our website at www.cityoforinda.org.

Public Works
Traffic Safety Advisory Committee (TSAC): at the monthly meeting of TSAC,
staff provided an update on the two current traffic calming requests for Dalewood/Sundown Terrace and Brookwood Road. The Dalewood/Sundown Terrace neighborhood met for a second time and finalized their plan for proposed traffic calming measures which included adding shoulder striping to visually narrow the road and placing additional 25 mph signs, new Playground Ahead and Watch Downhill Speed signs. TSAC reviewed this plan and recommended the proposed traffic calming measures to the City Council with the understanding the Orinda Downs Homeowners Association will privately pay for these Level 2 measures which are estimated around $10,000.
In addition, the Brookwood Neighborhood Action Team (NAT) received the first draft plan of their proposed traffic measures which included adding speed cushions at two separate locations (near Alma Music store and 50 Brookwood Rd), installing speed feedback signs in each direction, and various additional traffic signage. The draft plan will be discussed at a 2nd neighborhood meeting tentatively scheduled for June 11th. The preliminary cost of these improvements are estimated around $48,000. The NAT currently will be requesting the City to fund the proposed traffic calming measures without any private funding.
