 Orinda Youth Association

Staff and members from the Orinda Park and Recreation Commission recently improved  training for parent volunteer coaches.

New in 2014, each coach will be given 40% discount on their child's registration fee upon completion of a series of two online training sessions offered by the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS). One of the sessions is designed for coaches of all sports and is centered on sportsmanship, motivating youth, building confidence, working with parents and proper nutrition. The second session is sport specific and involves demonstrations for the coaches to apply to their practices. In addition, we are also implementing an on field training in conjunction with our coaches meetings. These on field trainings will put coaches through drills to give them an even greater wealth of knowledge that they can use to develop their athletes.

Staff and members from the Orinda Park and Recreation Commission also approved the creation of a series of coaching manuals that would be age specific and give coaches an outline of what skills should be acquired by their team by the end of the season. These manuals would also include diagrams with several drills to help guide the coaches during practice. We are hoping that these changes are able to better prepare our volunteer coaches and in turn create a better experience for the players while preparing them with the necessary skills to continue playing sports past the OYA level.

 ORINDA STATION CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

As part of BART's system wide Earthquake Safety Program, BART is in the process of strengthening Orinda Station to withstand future earthquakes. On February 7, 2014 work began on column structures at the entrance of the station that will temporarily limit access to the station for approximately three months. Crews will construct scaffolding and enclosures around the work which will restrict the station's entrance area. This means it may take longer to make your way through the station and around the work areas.

To contact the Earthquake Safety Program or obtain additional information, please visit  www.bart.gov/earthquakesafety; or call the Program Information Line at (925) 603-5342.

Key Findings from the Citywide Voter Survey

Telephone Interviews conducted January 16-26, 2014

  • Local voters remain overwhelmingly (98%) pleased with the City's quality of life.
  • Residents also continue to approve - with varying degrees of intensity - of the performance of nearly all branches of City government.
  • A growing subgroup, though still a minority, approves of the financial management of City government.
  • 70% of voters express initial willingness to support a $20 million bond measure to fund road and storm drain infrastructure improvements, a level of support that remains fairly stable after pro and con messages.
  • Top priority projects include repairing the streets that are in the worst condition, repairing collapsing storm drains, and repairing storm drains and pipes at the same time that roads are repaired.
  • The Orinda News, Lamorinda Weekly and other newsletters and mail are voters' top sources of information about the City.
City staff thanks Orinda residents for their continued support.

 Let's Play Ball!

The Orinda Sports Field ball diamonds received some tender, loving care, as staff prepares for the spring baseball season. The infield was graded and prepped on both fields and the roadside field infield grass was scraped to allow for play by multiple age groups.

Phishing in Orinda!

Recently, an Orinda citizen was contacted by a person claiming to be Chief of Police, Scott Haggard. The phone number (via caller ID) was an accurate Orinda Police Department phone number, and the person claiming to be the Police Chief attempted to scam the citizen out of money by claiming that the Orinda citizen had a warrant and that they would be arrested unless money was wired to an address out of the area.

The Orinda Police Department does not contact citizens requesting payment of warrants.  Please report contact with such requests to the Orinda Police Department immediately at 925-254-6820.
