Police Activity

Orinda Police arrests include, an arrest for violation of probation, possession of stolen bicycle and needle, 2 arrests for DUI and an arrest for child molestation.

The Investigation Unit packaged and prepared several cases for the District Attorney. They include a child molestation case and two elder abuse cases. They are also checking local pawnshops for possible stolen items.

Orinda Police helped with the Norcal Kids Triathlon held at Miramonte High School. The officers monitored the bicycle portion of the Triathlon and reported a lot of smiling faces.

Officer Gregory completed the 40-hour Field Training Officer Course. He is the new Field Training Officer in Orinda responsible for training new officers assigned to the patrol division.

Chief Haggard attended a search and rescue training exercise here in Orinda.  The training scenario involved an emotionally compromised teen.  Actors were prepared in advance to only give certain information to the search teams.  Chief Haggard found them to be very organized and professional in their business. Contra Costa County has a very active and involved search and rescue team.  They have multiple talents and resources including metal detection, search dogs, equestrian and more.  Orinda as a contract city to the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff has access to such resources in times of need.

Eden Senior Housing - A truck mounted crane is currently onsite  and installation of the building frame is scheduled to start soon.  The frame is being manufactured off-site and will be delivered in panelized sections for quick installation.  While the foundation took longer to build than anticipated, the frame will be installed in about 65 days and completion of construction is still on track for August 2014.   A different crane will take the place of the truck mounted crane and  will be similar in size to the large crane visible from Hwy 24 in Lafayette.

Public Works

Miner Rd./PG&E Rule 20A Undergrounding - At the City Council meeting last week PG&E made an initial presentation to reintroduce their proposed project to bury the existing overhead electric lines (Rule 20A) along Miner Road from Camino Pablo to Lombardy Lane. This project, which was originally proposed in 2004, is now planned for construction during 2014.  At the meeting the Council and several residents asked questions about the project and schedule.  The discussion also included the related topic of a long standing plan to add a pedestrian trail along Miner Rd. that the PG&E project would help facilitate by increasing the shoulder width.  City staff will work with PG&E to setup a public workshop in the near future to allow the public a chance to review the undergrounding project in more detail and to continue the discussion of adding a pedestrian trail.  The plan is that after the public workshop the Council will be asked to formally reauthorize the Rule 20A project.

2014 Annual Paving and Measure L Paving Project - Staff met with the City's design consultant, Nichols Consulting Engineers, last week to start the design of the 2014 paving projects.  The overall project will include the streets selected for the Measure L Sale Tax funds and the annual paving project which uses the Gas Tax and Measure J Return to Source funds.

Master Storm Drainage Plan - This week staff completed two interviews of the finalists for engineering services to prepare the City's Master Storm Drainage Plan.  This master plan is included in the 2014 Capital Improvements Plan and will inventory the City's drainage facilities, assess the condition and recommend a plan to repair and improve those facilities. Staff will bring a recommendation for award of the design services contract to City Council at the September 17 meeting.

Parks and Recreation

This week the recreation staff attended the "Jumpstart" event at Wagner Ranch Elementary School.  This event serves as the annual walk through for all Wagner Ranch students and also gives various community groups a platform to meet with Wagner Ranch staff.

City staff set up a booth and handed out informational materials for youth enrichment programs as well as youth sports leagues to the 400 students and their families that attended this three-hour event. In addition, registrations were taken for the upcoming developmental water polo program and flag football league!
