Police Activity

Orinda Police arrests included a DUI and an arrest for Warrants.  A filed case for Domestic Violence led to a suspect arrest in Berkeley.

The investigation of a child molestation case  is almost complete. The Investigations Unit filed the following cases with the District Attorney: Theft, Burglary and a DUI. The Investigation Unit successfully added attempted murder and torture charges to a domestic case.  The suspect is in custody with a bail of $2.1 million.

Officer Kevin Mooney provided a "ride along" for three winners of the Glorietta School Auction.  Students Ari, Jack, and Kate enjoyed the ride.  Detective Dennison contacted residents to coordinate future neighborhood watch meetings.

There were two night time burglaries in the Claremont and Warford Terrace areas.  These fit similar past actions in both Orinda and Lafayette. Detectives from both teams are working the case.

Chief Haggard met with schools Superintendent Dr. Jaconette to discuss school safety and programs.

Finance

During a discussion of the Operating Budget at the May 21, 2013 City Council meeting, staff presented additional information requested by the Council in preparation for the new two-year budget. Council gave feedback and provided direction to staff.

The May 30, 2013 budget workshop has been canceled. The next discussion regarding the budget will be held on June 4, 2013 at the Regular City Council meeting.

Public Works

Public Works Aesthetics Review Committee (PWARC) members met this week to discuss a variety of items including the mini-park located on the north east corner of the Moraga Way / Brookwood intersection. The park is on PG&E property however the City has a long-standing easement agreement with PG&E for the park. The Montelindo Garden Club generously volunteers their time and materials to maintain the park. PWARC discussed the proposed landscape plan that will be implemented once PG&E removes the first phase of redwood trees behind the fountain. The proposed landscape plan will go to the Parks and Recreation Commission in June 2013 for their consideration and approval. PG&E is anxious to move forward with the tree removal project however the City wants to ensure that a replacement planting plan is in place.

Composting

For less than ten minutes a week you can reduce your garbage and create healthy soil for your plants.  It's quick, it's easy-it's home composting! Home composting takes little time, space and effort, and it's so rewarding. Give it a try. Your plants (and your pocketbook) will thank you!

Composting is one of the best ways to make sure uneaten food doesn't go to "waste." Here in Central Contra Costa, there are several different programs for residents to participate in to help ensure that discarded food is diverted from the landfill and put to better use. Single-family households can either compost in their backyard or take advantage of the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority's (CCCSWA) Food Scraps Recycling Program.

Having a compost pile or container on your property is the most efficient and convenient method for diverting food waste from the landfill. The product of your composting efforts will be a wonderful nutrient-rich soil amendment that is free and right in your own back-yard. To make sure that your composting activity is a success, the CCCSWA offers backyard composting classes and discounts on compost bins.

Cal Shakes' 2013 season starts Wednesday, May 29 with the Bay Area premiere of American Night: The Ballad of Juan José by Richard Montoya, developed by Culture Clash and Jo Bonney, and directed by Jonathan Moscone.

Hailed as a "boisterous, rollicking, surreal...journey into American history" by the Mail Tribune during its run at Oregon Shakespeare Festival - the first play ever to be extended there - American Night brings the groundbreaking work of San Francisco's iconic Culture Clash to Cal Shakes for the first time. Drawing equally from pop culture and Shakespeare to mint a new kind of history play, American Night is a provocative comedy about one man's dream of becoming an American.

Grounds open two hours early for picnicking and checking out interactive art and pre-performance talks at "one of the most beautiful performing spaces in America," according to the Wall Street Journal.
