Charles Luu

Happy 2013! It's an exciting year ahead, with changes in healthcare on the horizon for our country and with implications for our alma mater. Your Association exists to keep our alumni informed, connected, involved and recognized. The most immediate connection: Reunion for the classmates of 1963, 1973, 1983, 1988, 1993 and 2003 this February 16-17. Next: the Annual Meeting of the Association, March 6,
with a call-in by alumni. For recognition: the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by March 1. Looking forward to a great year ahead!

Nominate a Distinguished Alumnus of the Year

Thirty-two amazing alumni have received the Distinguished Alumnus  Dawn Millerof the Year Award since 1979. Recipients are recognized at the May Commencement for outstanding service to SCCO, to the profession and to the community. With over 4000 living alumni there are many more deserving alumni to be recognized - we need your help to highlight them. Please submit the simple paperwork about an alumnus (or two) you admire by March 1. Contact alumni@scco.edu or 714.992.7832 with any questions.

Eunice Myung Lee, '99, as Regional Clinical Advisor, and Kellye Special Olympics Knueppel, '93, International Volunteer, will be providing vision care at the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes Games for an expected 2000 athletes at the Winter World Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, starting Jan 29. Paul Berman, O.D., F.A.A.O., Founder and Global Clinical Advisor of the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes, had this to share: "I really appreciate the support of SCCO and its alumni. It was one of the first colleges to get involved with Opening Eyes under the leadership of Carmen Barnhardt, '95 and Eunice Myung, '99, and now we have several Clinical Directors and leaders for Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes who are alumni of your institution. That is one of the reasons why we are so excited that the next World Games [2015] will be in Southern California to highlight the support of the college, their faculty, students and alumni." Thanks to all of our alumni supporting Opening Eyes and Special Olympics athletes around the world!

Longtime SCCO Employees Retire

Tom Runge, SCCO's Technical Maintenance Coordinator, retired December 21 after 38 years of maintaining every type of optical and optometric equipment imaginable and being in charge of building climate control. Diane Nagata retired January 16 after 30 years - most recently as the Campus & Student Housing Maintenance Coordinator, but some alumni will recall her smiling face behind the counter at the Bookstore for many years. We wish them both well in retirement.
