Junior Family Newsletter
Dear Class of 2017 Parents,

It's officially autumn! This is the time for your students to begin to think more seriously about life after graduation.  Statistically, approximately one-third of W&M graduates head directly to graduate school and two-thirds seek employment.  If your student has not fully engaged with the Cohen Career Center ("CCC"), we strongly recommend that they use this resource.  Students can schedule an appointment or walk in for a session.  The CCC can help your student see what careers other W&M graduates have followed, help assess strengths and capabilities, develop a resume, network for internship opportunities, and access information on many industries and career trajectories.

Separately as Parents, the CCC really needs your help.  They need parents who would be willing to serve in a number of volunteer capacities to assist W&M students in their career discernment process.  These roles include: mentoring, championing W&M to your HR department, serving as an industry expert, sponsoring a student or hosting a student/networking event. To volunteer, click here.

We hope your student is deeply appreciating their experience at W&M.  Each time we visit the campus (we were there this past weekend), we are struck by the history, beauty and uniqueness of the school and the many people who are dedicated to making it an even better place.  Drop us a line and let us know how things are going and what we can be doing to help your student love their W&M experience.

Sincerely,
Meg & Peter Carlsen, P '17
Residence Life
Fall brings cooler weather. If your student lives in a building with AC, visit the Housing Contract and click on Air Conditioners to learn about our procedures for shut down in buildings that are not individually controlled.

It's never too early to make travel plans. Find out which breaks the halls stay open and which one we close down for on our website.

Fall is wonderful time for students to attend awesome programs and events in their halls. Residence Life staff offers dozens of programs, on various topics, every week throughout the communities. Encourage your students to take a break and enjoy some hall fun.

Free for Fall Break? Fall Break is free!
Alternative breaks are student-led service-learning trips where students are educated about social issues, partner with a community organization to address that issue, and continue as active citizens in the home community. This Fall Break, Branch Out is offering three trips, all free of cost, to students - focusing on child homelessness in Norfolk, food insecurity and sustainable food systems in Goochland, and re-entry for formerly incarcerated individuals in Richmond. These three-day trips are a great way for students to shift gears, learn and build community with other dedicated students.
Tribe Careers - A Valuable Resource!
Tribe Careers is a valuable resource where students can search and apply for full-time positions and internships; sign up for mock interviews; view and register for workshops, programs, and employer information sessions; and access additional online resources. Students can also indicate their career interest areas in Tribe Careers to receive tailored messages and newsletters. As your student navigates the internship and job search process, encourage him or her to take advantage of everything that Tribe Careers offers!
