Greetings!
The 2015 Dreux AHS Reunion in May was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who was involved in the planning/execution and especially to those that attended!!
As I had mentioned in the April Newsletter, unless it's Reunion time, we usually do these newsletters a couple of times a year. We don't want people to feel that their inbox is getting hit too many times! (Just in case you are wondering why you haven't received one in a long while!)
Also, please remember that you can always "opt out" of getting the newsletter if you don't want to receive it. PLEASE do not mark it as spam, as that really could hurt our ability to use Constant Contact to send out the newsletters.
Featured in this newsletter: Message from our DAHS Alumni Association President Get to know a couple of our new Board Members Some photos from the 2015 Dreux AHS Reunion in San Antonio In Memoriam - Dreux Vikings we lost this year
Hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday Season!!

MESSAGE FROM OUR DAHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT
|
Bon Jour Vikings,
Well, summer is over, Thanksgiving has come and gone and the rest of the holidays are just around the corner. I trust that your summer was full of good times with family and friends. I know for me, it was a full-time on the road adventure, starting in May with our fantastic DAHS Alumni Reunion
in San Antonio, Texas.
If you were fortunate enough to join us, you know what a great time was had by all. The Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk was fantastic and the staff did a wonderful job making us all very comfortable. We had 98 Alumni in attendance from all over the US and Forrest Wulf '64 came all the way from Switzerland. All classes were well represented with the class of 1964 having the most attendees with 17. Class of 1966 came in at a close second with 15 alumni attending.
Our Reunion Committee did a fantastic job of making sure that everyone had a super time. Doug McPhee '66, the Reunion Chair, headed us off in the right direction with our host hotel and did a good job acting as liaison. I want to make a special recognition of the job that Nonna Carlson '64 did with all the on-site coordination. Nonna spent a lot of time with the hotel and the local area restaurants to make sure that everything was done first class. Jim Adams '66 and his wife Michele did a fantastic job with the Hospitality room and Paul Krausman '64 graciously welcomed everyone to the DAHS Teen Club with a special DAHS wine glass or pilsner glass as a souvenir. Marilyn Hutto Turner '62 kept a tight grip on the check book and was very diligent in making sure that we spent the Association's funds wisely. In fact, the Association actually made some money to add to the treasury, so that was a good thing. Vicki Key '67 did her usual good job of networking with everyone and collecting new information on lost Alumni. Also thank you to Helen Council Miles '61 for helping Nonna with the table decorations at our last night's dinner and to Dianna DuPree who was our special guest representing the Overseas Brats organization. Our featured speaker, Mike Alverson, gave a fantastic presentation on the Kennedy assassination.
I waited with anticipation for our very first DAHS Alumni Association President to arrive, Sam Goodrich '65, as he was my hero as a Freshman at Dreux. Sam has not changed a bit as he is still a real gentleman. It was great to finally get to speak to him after all these years because as a Freshman, I wouldn't dare.
Four of the 1964-65 Dreux Cross Country team were there: Gary Givens '67, Jim Adams '66, Dr. Allen Navey '68 and myself '68. None of us have changed a bit.
It was so great meeting up with everyone and sharing stories of our days at Dreux. They were golden for so many of us who got to leave home and learn to get along in close quarters.
We elected new Alumni Association Officers and Board members:
Charles Brantley '68 President Nonna Mann Carlson '64 Vice-President Jim Adams '66 Treasurer Jayne Findley Hunter '65 Secretary Vicki Key '67 Alumni Affairs (Locator/Database/Newsletter) Willy Brewer Taylor '65 At-Large Board Member Sally Downing Thomas '64 At-Large Board Member George Aune (Faculty) At-Large Board Member Marilyn Hutto Turner '62 2017 Reunion Co-Chair Carol Hutto Krausman '64 2017 Reunion Co-Chair
I would also like to thank Marilyn Hutto Turner '62, who served as the Association's Treasurer for many years and others who served on the Board for the past several years: Paul Krausman '64, Jan Rupe Batik '66, Anne Childs Smith '64 and Bill Willis '63.
At the DAHS Business Meeting in San Antonio, it was decided that the next official Dreux AHS All School Reunion will be in 2017. Our Reunion Co-Chairs, Marilyn and Carol, will be researching locations, dates, hotels, etc. and we will provide more information as it becomes available.
For those that might be interested, Overseas Brats is having their next Homecoming Reunion in Colorado Springs on August 4-7, 2016. Since it will be their 50th anniversary, the class of '66 is talking about meeting up at the Overseas Brats event to celebrate that milestone. Of course it's not limited to the class of '66 and I don't plan to miss it even though I am just a youngster from the class of 1968! We will pass along info on that get-together as plans progress in case you are interested in going to that one too.
Well, I have said enough. I am so proud of what this Association has accomplished and for the love and blessings that are felt each time we meet. Stay safe and healthy so that we can meet again soon.

GET TO KNOW YOUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS
|
Jayne Findley Hunter '65
I was born in 1947 in Oklahoma City, OK as my dad was in the Air Force. We moved to Vance AFB, Enid, OK where three brothers and a sister were born after traveling to Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, AL, and Memphis, TN for training....always going back to Vance AFB. One of my sisters was born in Holland and then another sister in Georgia. Seven of us kids! Then finally we moved to Holland the summer of 1960. So exciting and even learned the language.
In the fall of 1961, I started my freshman year at Dreux American High School in France. My roommate was Carol Hutto Krausman and our bathmates were Donni Shields and one of her sisters. The Berlin Wall was going up, so my dad brought me back to Holland after only six months at Dreux. I finally finished high school in Warner Robins, GA (Robins AFB), where our high school burned down. You always wish that to happen until it really does! I earned an Associate Degree at a Business College in Macon, GA.
I got married in 1968 at Robins AFB, and once again I started moving around. Moved to Mobile, Pensacola, Birmingham, Ft. Worth, Louisville, Paducah, and back to Mobile where I divorced after ten years of marriage. I raised two sons as a single mom.
I worked various jobs, as I still was in the moving mode, i.e., assisted in the founding of a marketing firm in 1980 for the purpose of marketing and training of computer software sales and support in Mobile, AL. I wrote and edited
the user's manual and dictionary as well as designed and wrote program reports. Worked several years for a shipping service company based out of London. The day before the 9/11 disaster I went to work for the American Red Cross. Then in 2006, I was accepted as the Fiscal Service Manager at the Mobile County Emergency Management Agency. I was also one of the lucky ones to be on call every five weeks for any events that may occur 24/7 for a whole week. (Over turned tankers, explosions at the docks, hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, etc.) Our agency was part of the State EMA and it was never boring. Each day was a new day, a new challenge.
In 2003, I married my wonderful husband, Bill Hunter. I had been single for 25 years, hence another new challenge. I no longer had control of the remote! Bill and I have a beautiful home here in Mobile, AL and have retired. We have traveled all over the States visiting family and friends from the state of Washington to Florida and everywhere in between.
I have to add this: In 2004 I found my daughter that I had given up for adoption. It was an amazing reunion and she has two wonderful children, so I now have seven grandchildren, Bill has two and three step-grandchildren, one flew Black Hawks for Medi-Vac in Afghanistan but is back in the States now. Together we have quite a family!

George Aune - Faculty

Born and raised in the upper peninsula of Michigan, I earned a B.S. in secondary education at Northern Michigan University in Marquette and "migrated" to the lower peninsula where I began my teaching career in suburban Detroit in 1959. A study tour to Europe in 1961 whetted my appetite to return to Europe which I did the next year and taught at Dreux American High School from 1962-1963. The summer of '62 our plane landed in Paris and the teachers were divided...one group going to Chateauroux and the other to Dreux.
Al Mathews was our principal and I taught 8th grade social studies and English and three sections of tenth grade English...my classroom was in a wing of the hospital as was the library.
It was a memorable year; several of us teachers followed the football team and basketball team to away games and I assisted in sponsoring the 10th grade class. A memorial day outing to Normandy Beach coast and an 8th grade field trip to Paris were fun. In the spring came the fantastic prom on a river boat on the Seine River in Paris followed by a breakfast party at the clubhouse back on base.
Returning to the states in 1963 following a summer traveling in Europe, I continued my education career which I completed in 1999. It included 40 years of teaching and being an administrator and earning an M.A. at Eastern Michigan University and a Ph.d. at The University of Michigan. Teaching at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan in my latter career, I worked with student teachers and taught several education classes. I enjoyed this very much......more than being a principal for 18 years!
My wife and I celebrated 50 years of marriage this year and are the grandparents of two granddaughters who live here in Santa Fe with our son, Erick, while our oldest son, Mark, teaches at Cal. State University in Pennsylvania. Traveling and reading and volunteering and doting on Sara and Charlotte are my main activities. I also sing in the chapel choir and lead a creative writing class when we are in Tucson during the winter. Being a docent for the Santa Fe Opera is my latest venture. Visit us in Santa Fe or Tucson....and we'll reminisce about Dreux and living in France.

A HUGE
to all who have paid Dues in the past!! As always, we appreciate any and all support! Your support is what keeps our Association going and helps fund the costs to find former classmates, maintain the database, website, newsletters, helps with reunion costs, etc. We can't do it without you!

Thank you to those who have sent in bios for the Alumni Spotlight feature of the Newsletter. But I need MORE! In order for me to continue this feature, I really need people to send me bios on themselves! I think it's a neat feature and hope you all are enjoying reading about your former classmates. I would like to get bios on folks from all class years. So if you haven't already been featured, please send me something to use in future newsletters.
It can be as short or as long as you would like, but basically I am looking for the following information:
What you did after you left Dreux, i.e. schools attended, military
What you do/did for a living
Where all have you lived after Dreux
Tell us about your family, hobbies and community involvement, if any
Talk about any special memories you have from your time at Dreux
I would also need a "Now" photo (jpg) of you as well.
Send your bios and "Now" photo to Vicki Key at VickiK3275@aol.com.

UPDATING YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
If your contact information has changed (i.e. email address, postal address, area code or telephone number) and you haven't notified me, please email that information to Vicki Key. I want to be sure that your contact information is correct in the Dreux AHS Alumni Directory! |
COME JOIN US ON FACEBOOK!
The Dreux American High School Group page on Facebook now has 564 members and is still growing. It's been a lot of fun! Former friends are reconnecting, uploading photos from Dreux, and having general discussions about the time spent at Dreux. I have the group as a closed group so that only those people associated with Dreux are involved. If you are interested in joining us, just use the "request to join" feature on the Group Page or send me a friend request and I would be happy to add you!
If you are on Facebook and have not already joined the group, here is the link to our page so you can join: Dreux American High School Group Page

Dreux American High School was open from 1960-1967. The first graduating class was 1961. The school closed in January of 1967. We have a very active Alumni Association. There have been 7 major reunions over the past 18 years, the last being held in February of 2013 in Orlando, FL. We have found 1,300+ alumni, faculty and staff and are continuing to locate folks!
