Since we have the Dreux Reunion coming up in May of 2015, I may be doing a few more newsletters than normal, but I will try not to bombard you with them. About the Hotel: Along the San Antonio River, you won't see any barges, Polar Bear Club events or rustic gambling boats. Instead you'll find tropical walkways, gourmet restaurants and rare boutique shops lining the banks of the peaceful river. You could even call it a luxury river. And there's no better place to experience this luxury river's delights than the Drury Plaza on the San Antonio River Walk. When we say "on the River Walk" we mean it. We also mean it when we say this hotel is beautiful. Formerly the Alamo Bank, this 24-story skyscraper was renovated to maintain its historical character while creating modern comfort. The lobby features 50-foot ceilings, travertine flooring and stained glass windows-forming the perfect ambiance.
The rest of the hotel doesn't cut any corners. Our guestrooms feature Flat Panel LCD TV's, comfortable beds and free wireless Internet throughout the hotel. Combined with our relaxing rooftop pool, the Drury Plaza will be pretty tough to leave- but we don't recommend staying in. San Antonio's many attractions include Sea World, the Market Square, and a historical attraction you'll always remember... The Alamo. Experience this wonderful city first hand when you attend the Dreux AHS Reunion!
HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL IN SAN ANTONIO IN 2015!

MICHEL PICHELOUP'S RECENT TRIP TO FONTAINEBLEAU!
|
I received an email with photos from Michel Picheloup '66 on November 15th. Here is what he sent along with these four photos:
Dear Dreuxites, Laonies and Bellifontains,
Enclosed you will find a few photos of me and my wife, Soritsa, on our nostalgia trip to France. Today we are in the south near Cannes visiting my cousins. Several days ago we were in Barbizon enjoying the foret de Fontainebleau.
In Fontainebleau the authorities shut down the fountain when it became known that a former Army brat was in town. Johnny's bar has changed considerably over the years but I am sure the memories are still inside. Fontainebleau city hall is all decked out as is most of the city.
It was a great pleasure to revisit many of places that so many of us held so dear those many years ago.
With best wishes to all of you,
Michel Picheloup 66

Mary Jane Sledge (Farley)
(was at Dreux during the 65/66 & 66/67 school years)
 | Then |
My first year teaching Math and Phys Ed was at Walker Junior High at Fort Knox, Kentucky. There I was around military people and learned about DOD from a couple of other teachers who had lived and taught overseas. After one year at Fort Knox, I applied but was told I had to have two years experience. Then I applied the next year and got a telegram in September after school had started. I got to Paris at a hotel there and waited for a driver to take me to Dreux. I had never flown in a jet airplane before but had taken flying lessons at Fort Knox. I wanted to travel overseas and thought this would be the best way to go! What a wonderful four years of my life - the teachers and administrators traveled as much as they could on weekends and holidays. I even learned to snow ski in the Alps. I loved being around military families from the early days at Fort Knox partly because they were world travelers & so interesting. | Now |
One interesting event happened when I took some students on a train to Germany. On coming back to Dreux, Debbie Kennedy missed the train. I was so worried about her but fortunately she caught the next train back to Dreux and it was at night. I should have known that military kids could find their way anywhere! I have talked to her on FB and she didn't think I would remember after all these years. I think it was a tennis trip to another DOD school- Susie Wear & Debbie Kennedy would know.
I taught high school physical education at Dreux from September of 1965 until January of 1967. I also sponsored the cheerleaders at Dreux. I left Dreux and taught Phys Ed at Seville High School from Jan 1967 until June 1967. I was a Dorm Counselor at Forrest Sherman High School in Naples, Italy from August 1967 until June 1968 and was a Dorm Counselor at Munich High School from August 1968 until June 1969. I married Gene Cameron Farley June 1996 and retired as Registrar from South Central Community & Technical College in Bowling Green, KY in 2008. I currently live in Bowling Green, KY. I still love to travel but haven't been back to Europe in several years. I continue to work for the college part-time when they call and need me to fill in.

THANK YOU TO GLORIA CLINE!!
|
Gloria Cline, who taught Phys Ed during the 64/65 school year and was a Dorm Counselor during the 65/66 school year, has donated some items that will be auctioned off at the 2015 Dreux Reunion in San Antonio. Gloria was in the process of downsizing and getting rid of things. In doing so, she ran across 2 signed posters of Ed Eller's Adam & Eve series (she thinks). She thought perhaps we could auction them off at the Reunion and the Alumni Association could retain the proceeds. She also found a 1964 yearbook and a booklet of "Poems on the paintings of Eller" by Thomas Livingston and has donated those as well. We will have the posters and booklet of poems at the Reunion to auction off. I am thinking, however, about doing an auction via email prior to the Reunion for the 1964 yearbook, but I need to work out the details. Again, the proceeds would go to benefit the Alumni Association. The 1964 yearbook is basically in pristine condition and still has the plastic on the outside protecting the outside covers. No one has signed the yearbook, so the pages are clean. This would be a really great acquisition for those that attended Dreux during the 1963/1964 school year and either lost their yearbook or didn't get one. I will keep you all informed once everything is put in place. So watch for details in the next newsletter! NOTE TO ALL: More Auction Items Needed If any of you have items that you would like to donate for the auction at the Reunion to help raise more funds for the Association, please let us know! Items could even be non-Dreux related items.

Thank you to those who have sent in bios for the Alumni Spotlight and Faculty/Staff Spotlight feature of the Newsletter. But I need MORE! In order for me to continue this feature, I really need people to send me bios on themselves! DON'T BE SHY!! It can be as short or as long as you would like, but basically I am looking for the following information:
What you did after you left Dreux, i.e. schools attended, military
What you do/did for a living
Where all have you lived after Dreux
Tell us about your family, hobbies and any community involvement
Talk about any special memories you have from your time at Dreux
I would also need a "Now" head shot photo (jpg) of you as well.
I hope to hear from everybody! Send your bios and "Now" photo to Vicki Key at VickiK3275@aol.com.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO VOLUNTEER TO HELP?

THANK YOU to John Roots '62 and Joanna Pugh Grant '64 who joined the others, i.e. Dawn Hall Lewis '65, Carol Cook '61, Doris VanArsdall Shea '65, Michelle Sonstelie Guy '67, and Patricia McCrea '62, in volunteering to make some phone calls to some of our alumni whose email addresses were no longer valid or for whom we do not have an email address!! We have had sone pretty good success so far!
If you would like to help and would be willing to make some phone calls, please let me know. There is no set time frame, just as your time allows.
The goal is to try to get an email address on each and every one of our alumni so they can be "in the loop" and start receiving these newsletters. It would also be very helpful as we gear up for the 2015 Reunion! So let me know and I will send you a small list, thanks!! |
WE NEED AND APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT!
Remember that you can pay dues by using your credit card if you prefer not to pay by check! Dues are $40/yr and you can pay for one year or multiple years. Just visit our Dreux AHS website at www.dreuxalumni.org and click on the Dues/Donations button and you will see the Dues menu for PayPal.
If you prefer to pay by check, you can send your Dues payment to:
Marilyn Hutto Turner 9831 Marine View Drive Mukilteo, WA 98275
Dues paying members will receive a copy of our current Dreux AHS Alumni Directory via email.
As always, we GREATLY appreciate any and all support! Your support is what keeps our association going and helps fund the costs to find former classmates, maintain the database, website, newsletters, reunion costs, etc. We can't do it without you!
Don't forget the drawing that will be held at the Reunion for those that pay 2015 Dues AND who register and attend the 2015 Dreux Reunion! Make sure your name is in that hopper!

UPDATING YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
If your contact information has changed (i.e. email address, postal address, area code or telephone number) and you haven't notified me, please email that information to Vicki Key. I want to be sure that your contact information is correct in the Dreux AHS Alumni Directory! |
COME JOIN US ON FACEBOOK!
The Dreux American High School Group page on Facebook now has 531 members and is still growing. It's been a lot of fun! Former friends are reconnecting, uploading photos from Dreux, and having general discussions about the time spent at Dreux. I have the group as a closed group so that only those people associated with Dreux are involved. If you are interested in joining us, just use the "request to join" feature on the Group Page or send me a friend request and I would be happy to add you!
If you are on Facebook and have not already joined the group, here is the link to our page so you can request to join: Dreux American High School Group Page

Missed a prior Dreux AHS Newsletter? You can view them on the Dreux website
In case you missed receiving any of the past Dreux AHS Newsletters for whatever reason, they are archived and available to view on our Dreux AHS website. Just click on the link on the front page of the website (www.dreuxalumni.org) to access them. PLEASE remember that you can always opt out of receiving the newsletter if you would like, but PLEASE do not tag or report it as SPAM. That really hurts our ability to continue to do these newsletters using Constant Contact and there are many people who enjoy getting them. We certainly hope you don't opt out, but it is certainly your choice. I try not to overwhelm everybody with them, but keep in mind that just prior to Reunions, we may do them more than we normally do. THANKS! |
|
Dreux American High School was open from 1960-1967. The first graduating class was 1961. The school closed in January of 1967. We have a very active Alumni Association. There have been 7 major reunions over the past 18 years, the last being held in February of 2013 in Orlando, FL. We have found 1,300+ alumni, faculty and staff and are continuing to locate more all the time!
