Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season and that the new year brings you good health and fun times!

I want to apologize for the length of time it has taken to do another newsletter!  I had planned to send one out in October, however my computer crashed the same day I had planned to do a backup before installing my new computer....SO I had to update several files from the last time I did a backup which was last April!  That'll teach me...Back up my computer files more frequently!  Anyway, all is good now.

FEATURES IN THIS NEWSLETTER:

A copy of the FIRST EVER Notre Viking Newsletter from October of 1960
Alumni Spotlight on 4 Former Dreux Vikings
Great time to pay Dues!  We appreciate your support!
Dreux Wine and Beer Pilsner Glasses Still Available!

FIRST NOTRE VIKING NEWSLETTER - 1960
Here is the Very First Notre Viking Newsletter

I have scanned and uploaded the VERY FIRST Notre Viking Newsletter. It is Volume I, No. 1 dated October 22, 1960.  My thanks to Betty Taplin Wood '64! She sent me all of the newsletters from the first year that Dreux was open and many from the 61/62 school year.  If you happen to have any newsletters from the 1962/63 or 1963/64 school years, please make copies and send them to me either via email or postal mail.  If you send it via postal mail, email me and I will send you the address.  I would love to collect them all and showcase them in future newsletters!  Anyway, hope you enjoy taking a look.  Some of it may be a bit hard to read because I had to reduce the size of the file in order to upload it to Constant Contact, but it is in really good shape considering the original that I scanned is about 53 years old!  I will feature more in the coming newsletters.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS

Mary Louise Wadsworth '68

Then

Mary Louise Wadsworth's family home is Farmington, Connecticut.  She has settled in Unionville, Ct.  Her late father was a retired Naval Captain so she has lived in many east coast cities and towns in the U.S and in Beaulieu and Dreux France.

Mary Lou attended college, enrolling in a business curriculum only to discover her passion and talent for interior design. She graduated from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in 1998 with a Residential Design Degree. While developing her design skills Mary Lou was attracted to Florida real estate. She earned a license to practice Real Estate in 2003 immediately followed by her certification as a "Home Stager" in 2005.  As the real estate market expanded so did Mary Lou's desire to remain active representing the industry and the customers she attracted.  In 2009 Mary Lou studied and added the Licensed Community Manager (LCAM) to her skill set.

Now

Having spent 20 years in Florida Mary Lou decided to re-locate to Connecticut in 2011.  Mary Lou is currently employed as an Interior Designer and Project Specialist with Lowes. Her success is complimented with several years of business experience in Interior Design, Fine Jewelry, Fashions, Finished Plants, Residential and Commercial Real Estate.

She one son and three grandchildren.  Mary Lou enjoys playing bridge, reading, knitting, cooking, baking, and yoga.  She volunteers countless hours on Rotary projects.

Norval Rasmussen '66

Then
I graduated from Dreux in 1966.  I attended the University of California at Berkeley on a NROTC scholarship.  I wasn't ready and withdrew voluntarily in the second quarter of my freshman year.  I joined the Marine Corps.  I spent a year at the Army Signal School at Fort Monmouth, NJ then went to Camp Pendleton, CA.  From there to Viet Nam and then to Georgia.  In the winter of 1969 WVU played someone else in the Peach Bowl.  My junior year high school sweetheart's family kept in touch with my family (we were all living in Algeria during Dreux years) and had passed on the fact that I was in Georgia.  Barbara Wickline ('66) called the base late one Friday night to see if I could meet her in Atlanta as she and her brother Alfred Wickline ('67) were going.  I couldn't but flew to Morgantown in Feb. 1970 and we were married that August.  I left the Marines in January 1971 to attend West Virginia University.  I graduated in December 1972 and began graduate school in biochemistry at WVU.  I had applied to WVU School of Medicine and was wait listed.  Someone dropped their space in August and I was in.

I graduated in 1977 and attended a pediatric residency at WVU.
Now
I left the residency in 1979 and practiced emergency medicine at the Morgantown community hospital for nine years.  I joined an internal medicine group that had purchased a general practitioner's practice and eventually left that practice to start my own.  I retired after 32 years in July 2012.

Along the way Barbara and I had a daughter, Sara, in 1975 and a son, Christopher, in 1977.  Both children went to the University of Virginia.  Sara is now on the faculty of the University of Virginia as an assistant professor of pediatric surgery.  Christopher holds a similar appointment in mathematics at Connecticut Wesleyan University.  We have four grand children, two from each child.

Barbara and I garden.  We have a thirty acre farm eleven miles from Morgantown. Our garden is about 20,000 square feet but we only cultivate 2700 square feet. The rest is grass, shrubs, flowers, patio and pond all surrounded by a four board fence and electric tape to keep the deer out.

I continue to collect stamps and am the editor of two philatelic journals.  I exhibit Tunisian and Algerian stamps at national stamp shows.

I also like woodworking and polish gem stones in my basement.

Retirement holds lots of excitement for me and I am never bored.

Martha Diane Sams '67

Then
I spent my Junior year at Dreux in 1966.  My Dad was stationed in Fountainbleau with NATO. The first semester of my senior year was spent at Paris American High School--which involved a 5 hr commute daily. The second half of the year was spent in Madrid at the American High School.

My boyfriend at Dreux was Jim Kimball.  I married him our Junior year at Baylor University.  The marriage failed several years later, but we have remained "friends" and have a daughter together.  It's ironic that 40 years later my family is currently renting a home from him as we search for land to retire and build our retirement home on.  For those of you who knew Jim, he did realize his dream of Medical School and is currently practicing Pediatric Medicine.

My room mates at Dreux were Mary Jo Walker, Susie Ware and Cathey (can't remember her last name--she was from Switzerland).  My next door neighbors were Debra Lee and Sharon Perkins.

My English teacher was Mr. Rutherford--what a character!!  He would yell at us all period long and then come to the dorm and play bridge with us. As I recall Hemingway was his passion.  My history teacher was Mr. Papineau--who once said to me that it would be better to keep my mouth shut and be tho
Now
ught a fool than to open it and prove it!  I can't remember my Chemistry teachers name--Mr Edward?--but I do remember catching the chem lab on fire and throwing "Pop Rocks" in the hall when the sprinkler system turned on...it was great!!

We used to go to the teen club after class and play pool and dance.  I remember several street dances and study times under parachutes we had inflated.  And who can forget the "senior rock" and all the raids we had back and forth to retrieve it from each others dorm rooms.   And of course I remember all the weekends we took the bus into Paris and ran wild all day.  Spring break we loaded up a bunch of us and headed for Berlin.

Dreux was a magical time in my life--why wouldn't it be with no parents and pretty much free reign of the base, Paris and Europe!

After graduation my family moved to Florida and I headed for College at Baylor University. Nursing was my major and indeed I have been nursing for 42 years! Most of my nursing career had been spent working the Cardiac Cath Lab and Emergency Department.  I have held many positions during that time--ranging from patient care tech to Director of Emergency Services in a Level II trauma service.  I've taught in nursing and paramedic programs.  I've also sold legal insurance, real estate and Tupperware as well!

I have two children--one a paramedic and another that is in management at State Farm.  Both my kids are married to wonderful spouses .  I've been blessed with 4 grandchildren.   About two years ago, my daughter moved to Charlottesville, VA. I was in Austin, TX at the time and my sister and her husband were living with me while they decided where they wanted to retire to.  So we sat down and decided what we needed in a retirement place--I said I had to have a Hobby Lobby, my sister said she needed a Bonefish Grille, and my brother in law said he needed an airport (he owns a consulting business)--and of course we needed it to be drop dead gorgeous.  We put all those criteria into the computer search and eventually came up with five sites.  We loaded up the car and took off to look--in
the mean time I put the house on the market thinking it would sale in 3-6 months.  Long story short, the house sold for cash in 5 days and we moved in three weeks.  Jim (my ex) said he had a house available for rent--and here we are in Lenoir City, Tenn--and it is gorgeous, it does have a Hobby Lobby, a Bonefish Grille and an airport. We've been here 11 months and feel like this is home.

I am currently "retired"  and have no plans to go back to nursing--it was a great career and I wouldn't have traded it--but so far I'm not missing it!  I spend my days doing water aerobics and trained for the Susan G. Komen last October.  I have gone craft crazy thanks to Pinterest and taught at a craft fair last November. I am finally able to "scrapbook" to my hearts content and I've joined several "groups" that keep me busy-- and when they don't I go to the kid's to spoil the grandkids!

NEED BIOS!!

I NEED BIOS!

Thank you to those who have sent in bios for the Alumni Spotlight feature of the Newsletter.  But I need MORE!  In order for me to continue this feature, I really need people to send me bios on themselves!  I think it's a neat feature and hope you all are enjoying reading about your former classmates.  I would like to get bios on folks from all class years.  So if you haven't already been featured, please send me something to use in future newsletters.

It can be as short or as long as you would like, but basically I am looking for the following information:

What you did after you left Dreux, i.e. schools attended, military

What you do/did for a living

Where all have you lived after Dreux

Tell us about your family, hobbies and community involvement, if any

Talk about any special memories you have from your time at Dreux

I would also need a "Now" photo (jpg) of you as well.

I hope to hear from everybody!  I would like to feature folks from the 60/61, 61/62, 62/63 and/or 63/64 class years in the next newsletter.  So please help!!  Send your bios and "Now" photo to Vicki Key at VickiK3275@aol.com.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO VOLUNTEER TO HELP?

THANK YOU to Pati McCrea '62 and Mary Lou Wadsworth '68 who have volunteered to help make some phone calls to some of our alumni whose email addresses are no longer valid or for whom we don't have an email address!!

If you would like to help and would be willing to make some phone calls, please let me know. There is no set time frame, just as your time allows.

The goal is to try to get an email address on each and every one of our alumni so they can be "in the loop" and start receiving these newsletters. I really think they would enjoy them if they knew they existed.   So let me know and I will send you a small list, thanks!!

A BIT OF THIS AND THAT

NEXT DREUX AHS REUNION ?

No news yet on when or where the next Dreux Reunion will be.  One option the Board may look at is having our next Dreux Reunion in conjunction with the Overseas Brats Reunion in August of 2016 in Colorado Springs, CO.  More information will be provided in future newsletters as decisions are made.

UPDATING YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION

If your contact information has changed (i.e. email address, postal address, area code or telephone number) and you haven't notified me, please email that information to Vicki Key.  I want to be sure that your contact information is correct in the Dreux AHS Alumni Directory!

COME JOIN US ON FACEBOOK!

The Dreux American High School Group page on Facebook now has 512 members and is still growing.  It's been a lot of fun!  Former friends are reconnecting, uploading photos from Dreux, and having general discussions about the time spent at Dreux.  I have the group as a closed group so that only those people associated with Dreux are involved.  If you are interested in joining us, just use the "request to join" feature on the Group Page or send me a friend request and I would be happy to add you!

If you are on Facebook and have not already joined the group, here is the link to our page so you can join:  Dreux American High School Group Page
