ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT GET TO KNOW YOUR OFFICERS
|
James Adams '66 DAHS Alumni Assn. Vice President
 | Then |
Jim arrived at Dreux in the fall of '63 from Villefranche, down on the French Riviera. He spent two years at Dreux before returning stateside to Washington, DC. Jim finished his senior year at Fort Hunt High School in Alexandria , Virginia.
Shortly after starting at Fort Hunt he met his future wife, Michele . After Jim graduated from Fort Hunt in the spring of 1966, he spent his summer working at Fort Belvoir. In September he enrolled and attended classes at George Mason College. The following year, Jim transferred to the University of Virginia to study Electrical Engineering. Jim graduated with a BS in Electrical engineering in 1971.
Two weeks after Jim graduated from Virginia, Michele and he were married and moved to Baltimore, Maryland where they spent the next 41 years raising a family of four daughters.
 | Now |
Jim worked for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company holding numerous engineering and administrative positions during his 41 years with the company. July 1, 2012 Jim made the decision to start another chapter in his life by retiring from Baltimore Gas and Electric Company.
Jim and Michele currently live in Charlottesville, Virginia, where they recently purchased a new home and are getting involved with the community. Jim now enjoys attending athletic events, gardening, taking on-line courses, participating in alumni programs, traveling, and expanding his beloved beer bottle collection (the collection is approximately 600 bottles and expanding with each new beer he finds and drinks). Jim's daughters are now all grown and live in various regions of the country. Jim has two fantastic grandsons and looks forward to taking many trips to Colorado Springs to visit them.

ROSS TIPTON, 102
Former Principal at Dreux (1964-1967)
 |
Photo from the 1965/66 Dreux Yearbook
|
Ross Fredrik Tipton, 102, of Columbus died May 20, 2013 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills. He was born Aug. 5, 1910, in Brazil, Indiana, the oldest of six children of Fred and Cora Tipton.
He was a lifelong musician, playing trumpet from a young age. He graduated from Indiana State University, and received his Master's degree from Purdue University in mathematics, chemistry, physics and music. He married Helen Lucille Hendricks of Oxford, Indiana in 1937, four months after meeting her on a blind date. They were devoted to each other and to their family, and happily celebrated 75 years of marriage together in September of 2012.
Ross was a professional educator, and worked as a teacher of math, science, and music, and was a basketball coach for many years. He became a school Principal, then Superintendent, working in the towns of Oxford, Linden, Delphi and Auburn, Indiana. During this time, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving as a Lieutenant JG radio officer on the USS Fergus in World War II. He crossed the Pacific five times on the Fergus, and was in Okinawa three times. Although he was exempt from the draft due to family and career obligations, Ross felt that he had to enlist in order to protect his family, and served honorably for several years.
After the war, Ross worked for the Department of Defense, supervising schools for the children of American servicemen abroad. He and Helen lived and worked in Turkey, Holland, France, and Germany. Part of his legacy will be the thousands of people he taught, coached, or conducted, many of whom continue to remember him even decades later. He regularly received letters from former students, particularly the alumni of the school in Dreux, France.
After returning to the United States, Ross worked as the assistant superintendent of schools at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, until he retired. He and Helen lived for many years in Maitland, Florida, where his passion for golf truly flowered. Rarely a day went by without Ross playing a few rounds or practicing his putting. One of his proudest moments was hitting a hole in one at Winter Park Golf Course; the trophy still sits on his shelf. In addition to golf, Ross loved dogs and liked to hunt, and he also liked cats.
In 2008, Ross and Helen moved to Polk County, North Carolina to be closer to family. He is survived by his wife, Helen, and his daughter, Mary Catherine Holcomb of Tryon. He was predeceased by his son, Thomas, of Tryon in 2011. In addition, he is survived by his grandson, Erik Holcomb of Tryon, his grandson, Brian Holcomb of East Lansing, Michigan, and his granddaughter, Christina Hammock and her husband Damion Hammock of Orlando, Florida, and Ross's great-grandchildren Gregory, Jordan, and Julia Hammock. He was dearly loved by his family, and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service is planned for 1:00 on Thursday, May 23 at LaurelHurst in Columbus. Everyone is welcome.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills and its employees and volunteers, especially Dr. Kennerly, Joanie, Trish, Walker Williams, Mike Clark, and special friend Bill Cline. They have all been a blessing to us.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 260 Fairwinds Road, Landrum, SC 29356. www.hofc.org.
Condolences may be left at www.pettyfuneralhome.com.

NEW WEB SITE FOR DREUX AIR BASE
|
New Web Site for Dreux Air Base Established
A couple of veterans who were stationed in Dreux in the late 1950's and early 1960's have put together a new website for those who were stationed at Dreux. It is fairly new and they are constantly tweaking it. There will mostly likely be more content as they continue to work on it. Bill McLeod, with the help of his son, is the webmaster and Charles Sibert is actively involved in collecting photographs that have been posted on the web site. There are LOTS of photos!! Rather than a Guestbook, they have set up a blog where anyone can post comments. Several of our Dreux alumni have already posted comments. If you would like to leave a comment or a memory of the base, go to www.dreuxairbasefrancememories.org and take a minute to look around. I am sure they would appreciate it.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO VOLUNTEER TO HELP?

A huge THANK YOU to Pati McCrea '62 who volunteered to help make some phone calls to some of our alumni whose email addresses are no longer valid or for whom we don't have an email address!! I gave her a list of names to call and she has been able to make contact with some of them. By making these calls, it also helps us to know if the phone numbers that are listed in the alumni directory are still valid as well.
There are more calls to make though! I would really like to have more volunteers that would be willing to make some calls. There is no set time frame, just as your time allows. If you are interested in helping, please send me an email and I will send you a list. (Not a really big list, I promise!!).
The goal is to try to get an email address on each and every one of our alumni so they can be "in the loop" and start receiving these newsletters. I really think they would enjoy them if they knew they existed. So let me know, thanks!! |
UPDATING YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
If your contact information has changed (i.e. email address, postal address, area code or telephone number) and you haven't notified me, please email that information to Vicki Key. I want to be sure that your contact information is correct in the Dreux AHS Alumni Directory! |
COME JOIN US ON FACEBOOK!
The Dreux American High School Group page on Facebook now has 500 members and is still growing. It's been a lot of fun! Former friends are reconnecting, uploading photos from Dreux, and having general discussions about the time spent at Dreux. I have the group as a closed group so that only those people associated with Dreux are involved. If you are interested in joining us, just use the "request to join" feature on the Group Page or send me a friend request and I would be happy to add you!
If you are on Facebook and have not already joined the group, here is the link to our page: Dreux American High School Group Page

Remember that you can now pay your DAHS Alumni Association Dues by credit card! We had lots of alumni asking for this option. Dues are $40/yr and you can pay for one year or multiple years, just as in the past. Just go to our Dreux AHS website at www.dreuxalumni.org and click on the Dues/Donations button. You will then see the PayPal box.
If you prefer to pay by check, you can send your Dues payment to: Marilyn Hutto Turner 9831 Marine View Drive Mukilteo, WA 98275
As a perk of paying dues and supporting our efforts, you will receive via email a copy of the latest Dreux AHS Alumni Directory. It's now 94 pages! As always, we appreciate your support in paying dues! It keeps this association going and helps fund the costs to find former classmates, maintain the database, website, newsletters, etc. We can't do it without you! So thanks!
If you are not sure about whether you are current on your Dues, there is a list of those who have paid Dues for 2013 and beyond in the Dues/Donations section of the Dreux website.

Dreux American High School was open from 1960-1967. The first graduating class was 1961. The school closed in January of 1967. We have a very active Alumni Association. There have been 7 major reunions over the past 18 years, the last being held in February of 2013 in Orlando, FL. We have found 1,300+ alumni, faculty and staff and are continuing to locate folks!
