Greetings!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!  We do have much to be thankful for, including the friendships that have been and continue to be rekindled among all of our Dreux alumni.

Remember that the Dreux AHS All School Reunion is just around the corner...February 8-10, 2013 in Orlando, Florida!

BREAKING NEWS REGARDING THE REUNION!
As a fun incentive, everyone who registers and pays the full Reunion Registration fee ($250) prior to December 31, 2012 will be eligible for a drawing to win a $100 gift card. The drawing will be held at the Reunion in Orlando.  There are two ways to register for the Reunion: online using PayPal or by completing the Reunion Registration form and sending in your check.  See details further down in this newsletter or go to Dreux website at www.dreuxalumni.org

Also, you might want to brush up on your 1960's music!  I hear that Forrest Wulf is planning something fun for the Reunion and a prize may be involved!

FEATURES IN THIS NEWSLETTER:
The November newsletter features our Dreux AHS Alumni Association Vice President, Charles Brantley '68 and Secretary, Jan Rupe Batik '65.  As mentioned before, I plan to highlight our Board members in the upcoming newsletters.  I would love to include other alumni as well, so send me those bios!

We received a great note from Mary Roberti, who taught at Dreux during the 62/63 school year and was Sophomore Class sponsor.  She has detailed her memories of Dreux.  See her note included further down in this newsletter.

If there are other features you would like to see included in the Newsletter, please shoot me an email!

At any time, you can always unsubscribe or opt out of receiving the newsletter if you would prefer not to get them.  Once the Reunion is over, they won't be as frequent.  For now, I am doing them monthly as we want to make sure everyone is aware of the Reunion plans.  If you do decide to opt out, please do not report the newsletters as Spam. If you use a spam blocker, please make sure that emails from constantcontact.com is on your approved or "white" list. If we get too many spam reports, this may inhibit our ability to send out the newsletter this way and I would hate to see that happen, especially since there are many, many folks that do enjoy receiving them.  Thanks much for your support of efforts!

A Message from our Vice President, Charles Brantley

A blast from the past for most of you!   Get out the 1964/65 DAHS Yearbook if you do not remember who I am.  Look for
the geeky looking Freshman under Charles Brantley (Charlie).

I was a five day student from Evreux and took the bus each Monday morning at 6:00AM to school.

I especially want to see: Bob Croteau who I understand tried to take my girl, Rene Andrew, away from me after I left for the States.  Casey Davis, the tattoo artist who I used to doodle with from Mad Magazines. Harold Gary, Ralph Cave and Robert O'Donnell who I played Babe Ruth baseball with in Evreux. Jan Tatala, Gerald Moore and Tom Kolakowski, some of my dorm roommates- remember the little rockets that we made from match heads and tin foil and launched out our dorm window.  How about the 21 door salute that we had one night and paid for it with hours of jumping jacks in the reading room.

Jerry Ricci also remembers Billy Goat Hill that we used to slide down on cardboard sleds, and the caves and the gypsies.

I ran on the Cross Country team with Ralph Cave, Jim Adams, Robert O'Donnell, Richard Napier, Charles and Chester Dent, and Darrell McCollum.  I wrestled at 95 pounds.  Jerry Ricci, Terry Foust, Mike French, Bruce Douglas, Pat Cron and Michel Picheloup were some of my team mates.

Yes, we have some memories to share and new ones to make.
I hope to see you all at the next Dreux AHS Reunion in Orlando, FL on February 8-10, 2013 at the beautiful Orlando World Center Marriott Resort Hotel.

Please go to the Dreux American High School web site and check out the Reunion details.

I know that God willing, I will be there.  Feel free to drop me a line. I would love to hear from you all. Thanks.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
GET TO KNOW YOUR OFFICERS

Charles Brantley '68

I am originally from Warner Robins, GA, home of Warner Robins AFB. My dad was killed in a car accident when I was 5. My mom, who had three little kids at the time, worked at the BX and eventually met an airman 3rd class and fell in love. Within 6 months, we were in Japan. What a culture shock, but the kids were young

Then

enough that it didn't hurt too much.

We had a great time in Japan. The people were so friendly and we wandered around without any fear. We had an Americanized house that was built by a local Japanese man so we didn't have to live in on-base housing for our first year. We lived in Japan for three years and were transferred back to Warner Robins AFB. Back home with lots of family, for a while.

Luckily we spent a few years in Warner Robins where I made some lasting friendships that I would renew several years

Now

later.

We spent three years in France where some great memories were forged. You can read about my memories of France and Dreux American High School on the Dreux web site.

After Evreux and Dreux, we moved to Hamilton AFB in Novato, California, north of San Francisco. I attended Novato High School for half of my 10th and 11th grades.  Then dad was sent to Thailand on TDY.  Of course, the family couldn't go, so mom decided to move us all back to my hometown of Warner Robins, GA.  Back home with relatives and kids that I had gone to grade school with before we went to France.

Moving back home was nice because I had ready made friends that I remembered from 5th, 6th and 7th grade.  I did well in High School, especially in sports.  Broke a few school track records, played football, wrestled (won State at 120 lbs), ran track and played baseball.  I was the only student to ever letter in four Varsity sports in my Senior year.  Took home awards for Most Outstanding in Wrestling and in Track.

I graduated in 1968 from Northside High School and considered a partial scholarship in wrestling from the University of Georgia, but there just wasn't enough money to stay.  Dad returned from Thailand right before my graduation and we were to be stationed at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, CA.  I decided to move to California with the family and planned to attend college where it was less expensive.  Dad packed up the family in a blue station wagon and we drove across the US from Georgia to Sacramento.  What a trip that was with two adults and five kids and all of our luggage. I would like to say that we bonded, but that would be wrong.

I found a part time job right away with Sears in the catalog department and spent four year there, all through college. I attended American River Jr. College and earned a 2 year business degree and transferred to Sacramento State College where I earned my BS degree in Personnel Management.  I met a preacher's daughter named Sandy and we married in my Junior year.

In 1971 my draft number was high enough so that I was never called up for military service.  No doubt that I would have spent some time in the Republic of Vietnam which I did not want to do.  I did have a scare with the Draft Board and had to take a bus to Oakland for a pre-induction physical.  I passed and was classified as 1-A, prime beef.  I immediately called my Draft Board in Georgia and was told not to worry that I would be reclassified to 2-S (Student Deferment). It happened just that way, but was too close for me. I worked real hard and made good grades.

I planned to stay on with Sears after college but they stopped hiring for full time management positions so I put my resume out.  Got a sales job with American Express Company and was sent to Portland, OR to open a new office.  I covered Oregon (what a beautiful state), Northern California and Western Idaho.  We lived there for two years before we separated.  Shortly after that I asked for and received a transfer to San Francisco.  I spent 12 years with American Express and moved 8 times.  I lived in San Francisco on two occasions, Sacramento, NYC, Atlanta and Charlotte, NC.

I remarried quickly and we had three beautiful children. This marriage lasted 11 years.  I am still close with my ex and we have four wonderful grandchildren.  They all live in Augusta, GA which is two hours from Greenville.  Just far enough away so that I don't have to deal with the drama.  Just writing checks all the time.

I left Amex and began a 20 year career with Discover card in Greenville, SC. What a good move. Greenville is in the foothills of the Appalachian Mt.  I love the mountains, especially the hiking and the many water falls. We also spend a lot of time on the South Carolina coast in Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head Island. I got involved in the Greenville community right away and have not slowed down in 20 years.  I met Mary Jane soon after moving to Greenville. I have to admit that I met her in a bar, but it has worked out just fine. We dated for 8 years (somehow I learned a lesson from my previous marriages) before we married.  That was 11 years ago.

Mary Jane is from Long Island, NY.  New York apple meets Georgia peach.  She is a wonderful person and works as a nurse at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital.  She has one daughter who is finishing up her college degree in May 2013...yea!

I hope to retire from Discover in two years and possibly buy a small place near Hilton Head, SC.  Maybe in a small community with like minded people and a golf course.  But for now, I work out of my home and stay busy around the town doing lots of volunteer work.  If you are ever near Greenville, look me up.  Would love to meet you and share some memories.

Reminiscences of Dreux
by Mary Roberti
Faculty '62/63

November 1, 2012

I received the other day a card inviting me to "Reunion 2013" for Dreux American High School.  Although the "fragility of age" (I just turned 79) keeps me more homebound than I care to be, I am reveling in the memories that Dreux conjures up.  That year (1962-63) was, in retrospect, the most exciting year of my teaching career (37 years in all), not only because it gave me

From the '63 Dreux Yearbook

oppotunities to travel, but because it brought me in contact with students whom I choose to think of as "special"--the students at Dreux were well traveled, especially "savvy" about the world, yet polite and eager to learn.

I taught Latin and English at Dreux that year and loved it, perhaps more than some of my Latin students loved Latin.  Maryann Colaluca, I recall, was not overjoyed in her sophomore

year to conjugate verbs.  But she stuck it out and I admired that.  My 12th grade English class intimidated me--they wanted a more dynamic teacher.  I tried, but they had a paragon of pedagogy in Marina Valenzuela, who taught French and Spanish, and who soon became a good friend of mine, in fact, my best friend on the base.  We traveled a lot together, many weekends in Paris, where we "hung out" at the Officers' Club on Rue Marbeuf, riding in Marina's 2-door sports car.  We took a trip through the Loire valley, went to Deauville, took in the French atmosphere (it helped that Marina was fluent in French, while I only pretended to be.)  By the way, Marina and I corresponded for a number of years.  In the late 60s, I flew to California from Michigan to see Marina.  She was the same--exuberant and challenging to be around.  Later, we lost contact, something I regret.  Thus, I did not know she was deceased. Marina was popular with the students, who revered her intelligence but loved the fact that she never took herself too seriously.  Other outstanding teachers were Sid Massey and Paul Francis, who had years of experience in the overseas system and were venerated as the "deans" of instructors.  I personally was intrigued by Greg Apkarian, principally because he lived off-base and looked so suave and sophisticated.  (His recollection letter to the Alumni of Dreux displays a prodigious memory for names and dates, with interesting comments about colleagues and students.)  George Aune also wrote "Dreux Memories" which I enjoyed reading.  He came to see me years later, while I was teaching in Monroe, Michigan, but left a note for me, as I was not in that afternoon.  He was a fellow Michigander, as he noted in his letter.  Joe Wade was a counselor who was close friends with Marina and me.  Joe did me the honor of flying to Ann Arbor to attend my Ph.D. ceremony in '72.

Al Matthews, our principal, was new at Dreux in 1962.  I recall vividly the first faculty meeting in the Teachers' Lounge, when the chair he was sitting in tipped over (with him in it), but we teachers, astounded, noted that he kept right on with his orientation.  No one said a word.  That man could weather any storm.  That first day, as we exited the room, he called me "Mariuccia" (an affectionate term for "Mary"), much to my surprise.  As an aside, he said to me, "My mother's Italian."  We were buddies from that moment on.  He was an unusual combination:  a disciplinarian with a heart of gold.  But I avoided sending students to him or to Mr. Hegemeyer, the Asst. Principal, as whiffs of corporal punishment were still in the air.

I do recall the Jr./Sr. Prom in Paris, where some of the faculty were chaperones.  One student stood out--Maureen Cassidy, a senior.  I knew more sophomores than seniors, as I was the sophomore class sponsor.  That "Bateaux Mouches" prom on the river Seine was memorable.  I also recall going with students to the Normandy Beaches on Memorial Day--it was cold the day we went by bus--on the original "Bluebird" bus (it really was blue then).  But it was a sobering experience for all.  Come to think of it, World War II was not so remote to us then.

I stayed at Dreux only one year.  Marina urged me to sign on for at least another year, but I had other plans.  I later regretted that decision.  Where else could I have gotten teaching experience to rival the excitement of the ambience and fellowship at Dreux and the kinds of students there?

I did continue with my graduate studies--an M.A. in Latin at the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the same institution.  I retired in '95 from Monroe County Community College where I was the Humanities/Social Studies division chair, moving to Phoenix, where I still live.

Thank you again for your invitation and for listening to my reminiscences.  I will be thinking of you all during that weekend.  My compliments on your spirit and enthusiasm for Dreux American High School.

     Have a wonderful reunion!

                                                                     Mary Roberti
