I've added another feature to the Newsletter!  Each newsletter I plan to highlight former classmates and let you know what they have been up to since leaving Dreux.  I will be starting with some of our Alumni Officers and Board members.  I would LOVE for everyone to send me a brief bio on yourself so that I can highlight YOU in a future newsletter.

If there are other features you would like to see included in the Newsletter, please shoot me an email!

Message from our President, Paul Krausman

Greeting Dreuxites:

It has been awhile since the last reunion and since then the Dreux HS Alumni Association has grown, and more friends have been contacted.  Now that we are getting ready for the next reunion, it is time to get our Dreux attitudes adjusted, start to make arrangements to see those ole Dreuxites, and plan to party.
The reunion committee, headed by Anne Childs Smith and Carol Hutto Krausman, has done a fantanstic job of setting up our new Dreux Bash.  It will be held 8-10 February 2013 at the Orlando World Center Marriott in Orlando, Florida.  Carol and Anne were able to negotiate killer rates at the resort hotel so make sure you register before 14 January 2013.  You were just sent a postcard with reunion information and more can be obtained on the Dreux American High School website.  Please plan to attend.  Whether this is the first reunion you have attended or are a regular attendee, we want to see you.  ALL of the past reunions have been memorable and each one is better than the last, so please plan to come and encourage your high school friends to show up also.
I want to take a moment to thank the Alumni officers and board for all they have done to make this reunion possible and to Vicki Key for keeping track of Dreuxites and adding new ones regularly.  My hat goes off to all of them.  Plan on coming to the reunion and you can thank them in person.  The holidays are approaching but don't forget Dreux and keep the reunion in your plans.

Happy Halloween and Happy Holidays

Paul R. Krausman
President, Dreux American High School Alumni Association

Then
I was born in Washington, D. C.  in 1946, but did not stay stateside for long.  My dad was in USAID and we were sent to Egypt when I was in the first grade.  After a stint in Libya for 4 years we went to Tunis.

My family was stationed in Tunis, Tunisia when I was in High School and I went to Dreux with my older sister Jeanne.  After Dreux, my father was stationed in Afghanistan and I went there for the summer before  returning to the U.S. for college.

I first attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville for a semester beforetransferring to Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio where Carol Lee Hutto (my Dreux girlfriend and future
Now
wife) was going to school.  We married in 1966 and I transferred to The Ohio State University where I obtained my B.S. in zoology. Upon graduation, I had several job offers but the one with the military was the one I could not turn down--without getting arrested anyway.

I joined the USAF and served 3 years, 9 months, and 11 days working on the tail end of the unmanned space program and the beginning of the manned space program. I started the service in San Antonio, Texas and ended it in Alamogordo, New Mexico.  During my military service, I was able to work on my M.S. degree in wildlife management from NMSU and graduated about the same time I got out of the USAF.  From there I went to Texas A&M to begin a Ph.D. program.  I conducted my field studies on deer in Big Bend National Park, Texas and graduated in 1976.  I started at A&M but my major professor went to the University of Idaho and asked me to go with him ao I graduated from Idaho.  At that time Carol and I had 2 children (Curtis Drew [we were going to spell it Dreux, but did not think folks would pronounce it properly] and Julie).
My first job out of school was at Auburn University at Auburn, Alabama as an assistant professor of wildlife.  After 2 years we went to the University of Arizona for 30 years.  During that time, Carol obtained her RN degree and she spent 25 years working at the University of Arizona and Medical Center.  Our children also obtained B.S. degrees and a M.S. degree (Curtis) at the University of Arizona.  After spending most of our lives in the desert, I was offered the Boone and Crockett endowed chair at the University of Montana in 2007 so we packed up and headed north. We are going on our 6th year in Missoula, Montana and enjoying the change of scenery.  Curtis and his family of 6 live in Chandler, Arizona, and Julie with her family of 5 live in Logan, Utah, so we have interesting places to visit.  We also have a home in Clinton, Washington on Whidbey Island, Washington and are able to visit with Carol's sister, Marilyn and her family from time to time.
I teach in the fall (wildlife management classes) and conduct research and write (wildlife papers and books) the rest of the year.  Besides serving as your president, I am serving a stint as president of The Wildlife Society, the professional organization for wildlife biologists, and am serving as interim executive director for the society.
Carol quit her job when we were in Arizona to take care of her elder parents and her mother moved to Montana with us after her father died.  She was with us for a couple of years before she died at the ripe old age of 95.  For the past year, Carol has been dealing with family matters and keeping the ranch going.  Besides our  7 grandchildren we have 2 horses, 2 dogs, and 2 cats.  Retirement is out there somewhere but we are not sure where or when.  Wherever it is,  we look forward to more time with friends, animals, and family.

Then

In 1965 I arrived at Arkansas State University in
Jonesboro,
AR straight from France, and boy, was it ever a culture shock!  Talk about "another sleepy, dusty Delta day!"  I didn't even know what the "funny" letters were on all the dorms until the girls started rushing me.  I pledged Phi Mu Sorority and loved it.  After two years at ASU, I got married, had my son Trey, and got a divorce in the space of about a year.  I entered Memphis State University (now The University of Memphis) in 1968 after my dad retired from the Air Force and he became employed at the university.

I worked my way through MSU at Holiday Inns, Inc. which was founded here in Memphis.  After graduation (1970, BA in English), I worke
Now
d for Holiday Inns for 20 years, eventually winding up in the franchise and real estate department.  I traveled all over the US and Mexico and thought my job was extremely "glamorous!"

After Holiday Inns, I started a special event/conference production company named Taylor-made Productions.  In 1996 I moved to Pensacola Beach, Florida, with a house right on the beach, thinking I had finally retired.  (As a side note, I became a real Blue Angels groupie, even though I grew up in the Air Force.)

However, in 2000, my son gave me my one and only grand child, a girl, so I reluctantly left the beach for Memphis.  I went back to work for Holiday Inn again.  The company had just built a Holiday Inn Express hotel and a Hotel Management School on campus at The University of Memphis.  There I was a special event/conference coordinator, so everything came full circle.

I'm now really retired and live in a designated national historic neighborhood by the U of M campus.  I'm very active in the Normal Station Neighborhood Association serving as an area coordinator.  I'm teaching an elderly woman to read through the Literacy Memphis program - very rewarding.  I also volunteer for WEVL-FM 89.9, an all volunteer radio station that I would advise you to listen to on-line.  It has been voted Memphis' best FM radio station for the past 6 years.

I despaired of ever seeing or hearing of anyone from Dreux until one day in 1993 I read an article in the paper that Overseas Brats was hosting a reunion at Grapevine, TX.  I had never heard of Overseas Brats OR Grapevine, TX, but I took a flying leap (literally), and there at the reunion were all my wonderful friends from Dreux...Vicki Key, Patricia Massengale Caroom, Sam Goodrich, Betsy & Jane Patrick, Maureen Sevilla, Dennis Morales, Debby Lee, Charlie Evans, and Chic McGenty to name a few.  Not only that, but my high school sweetheart, Micky Doak, found us somehow and I talked to him on the phone for the first time in 27 years.  I thought I'd died and gone to DREUX!!

I went to Dreux only one year, graduating in 1965, and it truly will always be one of the best years of my life.  If I had not gone to Grapevine, TX, I never would have seen any of you again nor met all the other wonderful people who call Dreux our true Alma Mater.

I NEED YOUR HELP!

If any of you attended the University of Paris and have access to their alumni database online or past yearbooks, I need some help!  Both Deborah Thomas '65 and Linda Kozlowski '66 attended UOP after Dreux.

I believe the Alumni Office at UOP has a current address for Deborah Thomas, but of course, they can't release it. If you have or can get access to their online alumni area on the UOP Alumni website, would you please log on and see if she is listed.  I need a married name, middle name, current address, etc. if possible.

On Linda Kozlowski, I don't believe they have her current info on file, but if you have a yearbook from UOP for 66/67 or 67/68 and perhaps even the next two year beyond that or have access to one, would you please see if she is in those yearbooks.  I need a middle name for her and/or any other info that might be helpful that might help us find her. Please forward any information on those two people to Vicki Key:

Come Join Us on Facebook!

In case you are not aware, we have a Dreux American High School Group page on Facebook with 469 members and growing.  It's been a lot of fun with former friends reconnecting, uploading photos from Dreux, and general discussion about the time spent at Dreux.  I have the group as a closed group so that only those people associated with Dreux can become members.  If you are interested in joining us, just use the "request to join" feature on that page.

PayPalimage

DUES NEWS!!

You can now pay your DAHS Alumni Association dues by credit card!  We have had lots of alumni asking for this option, so now it's here.  We have set it up through PayPal.  Dues are $40/yr and you can pay for one year or multiple years, just as in the past.  Just go to our Dreux AHS website at www.dreuxalumni.org and click on the Dues/Directories button.  You will then see the PayPal box. You can still pay by check as well if you prefer that method.

If you prefer to pay by check, you can send your Dues payment to:
Marilyn Hutto Turner
9831 Marine View Drive
Mukilteo, WA 98275

As a perk of paying dues and supporting our efforts, you will receive via email a copy of the latest Dreux AHS Alumni Directory. It's now 94 pages! As always, we appreciate your support in paying dues!  It keeps this association going and helps fund the costs to find former classmates, maintain the database, website, newsletters, etc.  We can't do it without you!  So thanks!

We also have quite a few alumni that like to make a donation as well as pay dues or would just like to make a donation to support our efforts.  There is now a "Donate" button on the Dues page of the Dreux website that links to PayPal as well.

Dreux American High School was open from 1960-1967.  The first graduating class was 1961.  The school closed in January of 1967. We have a very active alumni association.  There have been 6 major reunions over the past 17 years, the last being held in August of 2010 in Reston, VA.  We have found 1,200+ alumni, faculty and staff!
