On his mind...

I am looking forward to the time when we will look back and realize what dark ages we currently practice medicine in.  While the accelerated pace of adoption of health IT is a step in the right direction, we are so far from the potential we all see in health IT.  Most of us are working to achieve meaningful use with ineffective IT products that are nearly unusable and potentially unsafe.  That said, I am finally beginning to see glimpses of where we hope to go - IBM's Watson applied to propose individualized cancer treatments; SMART platforms encouraging 'app' like catalogs of software solutions; usability being recognized as a safety issue, not just a convenience; machine learning and predictive analytics being applied to large databases of medical information; projects like Jerry Osheroff's Clinical Decision Support Collaborative developing freely accessible libraries of effective diagnostic and therapeutic clinical decision support... the list goes on.  Once effective health IT is harnessed, the role of the physician will change dramatically and the advancement of diagnostic and treatment guidelines will accelerate at such a pace that we will be dependent on clinical decision support to achieve 'computer assisted doctoring.'  This is an exciting, and frightening, future of medicine, but ultimately I look forward to a time where I do not spend the majority of my time interacting with the EMR and not the patient.
