Founded in 1972, their mission is to restore, maintain, and improve Ohio's rivers and streams, their water quality, scenic beauty, their multiple economic uses and their effect upon Ohio's quality of life.

On Saturday, September 28th, The Whole Foods Market will be hosting a first of its kind (for Northern Cincinnati) Food & Wine FestivalThe Mason Food Pantry in partnership with the Green Umbrella and Mason-Deerfield Art Alliance have been selected as this year's partners! The proceeds of the event will go help fight hunger throughout the region and to bring awareness of ways to keep our planet healthy by sustainable practices and to promote the local arts.

Big Idea Challenge
The Greater Cincinnati Foundation has announced 21 finalists for the Big Idea Challenge, and Green Umbrella affiliates have taken all three slots in the Environmental Stewardship category! Up for a $5,000 grant (and potentially a $50,000 grand prize grant):
  1.  Taking Root Tree Planting Campaign (submitted by Scott Beuerlein)-Inspire the community to combat the many threats to our trees by planting 2,000,000 trees, one for each citizen in the tr-state.
  2. Inspiring Prosperity through Sustainability Education (submitted by Laura Collins)-The Growing Up Green Mobile Classroom uses creative problem solving to engage regional youth with sustainable technologies and practices.
  3. Sustainable Transportation Alliance (submitter by Adena Kass)-Change Cincinnati's transportation culture to embrace sustainable transportation options, starting with employers' policies and incentives.
25th Anniversary of Sawyer Point
On the 25th anniversary of the opening of Bicentennial Commons at Sawyer Point Park, the Cincinnati Park Board wants to take a fresh look at the park and determine what changes and improvements may be appropriate! As part of this assessment process, Sawyer Point want to hear people's concerns and ideas about how the park might change and improve.

GoSun Stove Has Launched on KickStarter!
Recently, Cincinnati's Patrick Sherwin has launched GoSun Stove, a portable, high efficiency solar cooker. This little solar cooker can cook a meal in 20 minutes, safely sizzling up to 550�F, the GoSun Stove is the first truly practical fuel-free cooking solution. Additionally, the GoSun Stove team aims to reduce the use of dirty fuels such as wood and charcoal for cooking.
LEWFM Named #1 Farmers' Market in Ohio
Lettuce Eat Well Farmers' Market (LEWFM) has just been named the #1 farmers' market in Ohio and #4 farmers' market in the country in the American Farmland Trust's I Love My Farmers Market Celebration. This celebration encouraged consumers to pledge to support family farmers by shopping directly from them this summer.

TANK is Looking into the Future
The Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) is currently developing the plans for a future transit network at Northern Kentucky. Together with a team from a Seattle-based Transportation Consultancy, TANK is participating in a one-year study, studying its current fixed-route network. On July 1st, the study team completed the data collection phase and now needs YOUR feedback!

The Top 100 Project
Check out some of the Top 100 Ways the region around Cincinnati is greener than you think:
  1. In 2012, GCEA saved its clients more than $500,000 on energy bills, created more than 50 jobs and added more than $20 million to the local economy.
  2. UC's DAAP and Village Life Outreach program provided net-zero energy, water, and a waste facility to an area in Tanzania. The project was designed in Cincinnati and built in Tanzania.
  3. Hamilton County Parks protects more than 16,000 acres of greenspace in the county.
  4. Cincinnati Parks was ranked in 2009 as a Top Urban Park System in the Excellent Parks study by the Trust for Public Land.

Civic Garden Center- September is an important month for the garden since harvest and planting happen simultaneously. Do you have a few hours to spare?
