CST Dome in Great Lakes
Covering Space Creatively
A Heritage Derived from Engineering, Designing and Installing Aluminum Dome Roofs

Inside of Crenshaw Dome by CST

Crenshaw Christian Center

Los Angeles, CA

CST began installing aluminum dome roofs primarily in the industrial marketplace and grew into the global leader manufacturing lightweight, high-strength aluminum roof systems that have been used in a broad array of settings around the world.  Efficient in design, distinctive in appearance, unsurpassed in quality and value - CST Aluminum Domes are as beautiful as they are efficient and enduring.

CST Design Flexibility

CST's aluminum dome is a unique and patented triangulated framing system clad with aluminum panels and secured by a patented batten closure system.  With an ability to cover spans from 40 to more than 1000 feet, CST's aluminum domes are specified for churches, arenas, planetariums and observatories or wherever clear-span roof systems are needed. Aluminum integrated structural frames are permanent and lightweight and optional panel systems offer eye-dazzling design flexibility.

Superior Design and Lower Cost
The dome's superior structural design gives it many advantages. Using proprietary variations of geodesic geometry, CST's aluminum domes are noted for their ability to meet exacting live load requirements by providing greater stiffness and strength, pound-for-pound, than any other dome geometric system.

The energy efficiency of CST's aluminum dome translates to reduced operating expenses. Since they're made of aluminum, they have the inherent advantage of high heat reflectivity and low emissivity. That means lower heating and cooling costs.  Save on maintenance dollars too. The permanent aluminum exterior never rusts, rots, spalls, or solar degrades. And because CST's Aluminum Domes use less material and labor than conventional constructions, overall costs are lower and construction time is faster. The built-in advantages of aluminum and lifetime beauty of a CST dome will be appreciated for years to come.

Using CST Dome Technology for Architectural Designs
CST Covers Aluminum Dome 10,000 Seat Multi-Purpose Arena

Bell County Expo Center

Belton, Texas

CST Covers' aluminum dome rises 56 feet above the arena's 40' high steel-framed exterior wall. White, vinyl-faced fiberglass insulation which is bonded to the interior of the 2,016 triangular aluminum roof panels keeps cooling costs low and provides effective acoustical absorption.  The dome was engineered to support a gross rigging load of 86,000 pounds, plus the added weight of a scoreboard, speaker cluster and catwalks.

CST Covers was recently contracted to replace the aluminum panel skin and insulation system after the Event Center was damaged in a very bad hail storm. The original dome was built over 25-years ago.

The Flattest Single Layer Dome Ever Built

Changsha clear span by CST Covers

Hunan Province Government Offices

Changsha, China

The 203-ft glass structure is a key architectural feature of the government building for the Hunan Province government offices in the city of Changsha, China. The structure covers an atrium area at the intersection of four buildings and has two large curved openings that give the structure its distinctive appearance. With a span of 203 feet between supports and a rise of 19' 5" at the center, the structure is the flattest single layer glazed aluminum dome ever built.

CST's design solution accommodated the key architectural feature of the bow tie shaped conceptual design and

satisfied the architect's desire to build a glazing system with a

dramatic low rise configuration. Construction of the spaceframe

was completed in December, 2003.

Aluminum - A Sustainable Structural Choice
CEU Course Renewed Online.  Course is downloadable on McGraw Hill App!

Arch Record Link

CST Industries sponsors CEU course with Architectural Record's Continued Education Learning Center. The online course is published at ceu.construction.com.  Course announcements are published in Architectural Record and ENR.  This course will:

  • Discuss the efficiency of using lightweight, recyclable aluminum in clear-span structures by eliminating secondary structural members.
  • Compare how aluminum is an efficient, waste reducing alternative to steel in overhead, sloped and vertical applications.
  • Avoid maintenance and life cycle costs by specifying a product that is durable and resists corrosion.
  • Explore case studies of geometric structural designs used for lattice and spaceframe aluminum structures that have received green building certifications.
CST's Solution for the Francis A. Gregory Library - Aluminum Over Steel

Building Design that Pushes Engineering Limits
Cantilevering over 30 feet on a flat roof proved to be a design challenge for architects, Wiencek+Associates
and Adjaye Associates.  CST developed a lightweight system utilizing aluminum which alleviated 2/3 of the weight and allowed for this graceful structure to float
atop the roof of the new Francis A. Gregory Library in Washington, DC. CST Engineers utilized innovative software and an unique design approach to create a dynamic signature structure.
