AMC Executive Director

Ann Martin Center experienced a generative year in 2015.  We continue to put down roots in Emeryville as our psychotherapy and learning services expand at the clinic and into Oakland public schools.

A major headline for the year is our application to become an accredited training program as part of the American Psychological Association.  Culminating months and months of preparation, we hosted APA site visitors in November who reviewed every aspect of our organization's training and service delivery model.  In the spring of 2016, we'll hear the official word but the preliminary signs for approval look very positive.

A couple weeks ago, we were also very thrilled to have a special speaker, Pete Docter, from Pixar Animation Studios, in our Parent Education Program (PEP). It was a very fascinating and heart-warming presentation on the making of Inside Out.

Ann Martin Center is a community-supported nonprofit organization that depends on the generosity of so many of you each year.  Children directly benefit from our services but we believe that our work promotes connectivity and cohesiveness for the entire community.  Thank you for caring and for sharing your ideas, inspirations, and financial gifts.

Wishing you a joyous holiday season & a happy New Year!

Sincerely,

AMC hosts Pete Docter from Pixar Animation Studios

Earlier this month on December 4th, we were privileged to host a special speaker in our Parent Education Program (PEP).  Pete Docter is the writer and director of Disney-Pixar's summer blockbuster hit Inside Out.  The story considers the internal life of a pre-teen girl from the perspective of her personified core emotions: Joy, Anger, Sadness, Disgust, and Fear.  Considerable science and research went into representing emotions, memory, and personality in the film.  Pete gave a fun and informative presentation on the "making of" Inside Out, and answered questions from a captive packed house in our lecture hall.  Thank you to all who attended and participated in this very informative & engaging lecture.

AMC's Bereavement & Serious Illness Program

By Kristina Whitney, Psy.D., Bereavement Program Coordinator

For almost thirty years, Ann Martin Center's Bereavement and Serious Illness Program has provided psychotherapy and consultation to individuals and families coping with the devastating consequences of a death or terminal illness.  Our clients range from children who have experienced the sudden death of parent to families that have weathered protracted life-threatening illness to parents seeking guidance about how to help their children cope with death.

Our clinicians receive specialized training in the intensive, open-ended treatment of complex and complicated mourning processes in children, adolescents, adults, and families.  Clinicians meet weekly for an advanced clinical seminar with a focus on how to facilitate grief and mourning in a developmentally responsive manner to help family members adjust to the loss.  For the 2014-2015 training year we had seven clinicians participating in the project, ranging from clinical interns to long-time clinical staff.

This year's training included psychoanalytic theories of mourning, the controversy over whether children possess the requisite psychological capacities for mourning, preconditions for mourning, and the idea of a developmental line in the capacity to mourn. Then there were a series of case studies that covered topics such as children dealing with depression and loss, the interplay of trauma and loss, the role and functioning of the surviving parent/caregiver, and how to use the therapeutic relationship to understand the needs of bereaved children.

Providing intensive, specialized training and consultation to Ann Martin Center clinicians helps prepare them to most effectively meet the needs of bereaved children and families seeking treatment in our outpatient clinic and in the school-based clinical programs. As clinicians trained in childhood loss, bereavement and mourning move into the broader professional community, we hope they will continue to use, apply and further extend their training in psychoanalytic thinking about working with bereaved children and families in the course of their work at other treatment settings and at training institutions.

We would like to acknowledge the generous support of the Sophia Mirviss Memorial Fund for funding the training component of our program for the past three years.

Annual Spring Gala 2016

Friday, April 29, 2016
Oakland Scottish Rite Center

We invite you to join us on Friday, April 29, 2016 for a Night of Magic to celebrate Ann Martin Center's successes and to sow into the future of our psychotherapy and learning programs. We are excited to host our annual fundraiser at a new location, the majestic Scottish Rite Center across the shores of Lake Merritt in Oakland.

The evening will include a cocktail hour and silent auction, gourmet dinner, live auction, special appeal and entertainment featuring renowned magician, Patrick Martin.  Auctioneer Keith McLane of KLM Auctions will amuse the crowd raising bids for unique getaways, dinner parties, and more!

100% of proceeds will benefit Ann Martin Center's vital programs and services providing psychotherapy and learning support for at-risk youth in the East Bay.

We're very excited to announce Michael Wild, executive chef and co-owner of BayWolf Restaurant, as our Gala Honorary Chair.

In 1975, Michael Wild co-founded BayWolf Restaurant in Oakland, creating one of the most elegant, inviting, and lasting culinary traditions in the Bay Area.  Michael has been a pioneer of California cuisine integrating influences from Tuscany, Provence, and the Basque country.  The restaurant closed in 2015 after a remarkable 40 year run.

Michael nurtured a pride in craft for every aspect of the experience at BayWolf.  At the same time, the bistro earned a well-deserved reputation as a gathering place for the community, attracting a devoted following.  Over the years, friends and colleagues of Ann Martin Center have enjoyed many an hour at BayWolf celebrating life and gastronomic delights.

Prior to his incarnation as a restaurateur, Michael was an English and Humanities professor at San Francisco State University.  He and his wife Jill have three sons.
