Upcoming Professional Development
Lecture
Mindfulness and Self Regulation
Friday, October 17, 2014
12:30 - 2 p.m.
Presenter:
Elaine Peterson, MEd
A growing body of evidence suggests that mindfulness - the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment - can help young people self regulate at home and at school, improving their learning potential and emotional well-being. Cultivating awareness of breath, thoughts, senses and emotions can greatly benefit adults and children alike. Specific conditions like ADHD, executive functioning, and different behavioral challenges can respond positively to "awareness practice". This talk will explore what mindfulness practice looks like and how to implement it in the classroom, as well as in one-on-one educational and psychotherapeutic settings. Current research will be reviewed, as well as specific guidelines and exercises designed especially for children.

Our new training year at Ann Martin Center is underway. It's always an exciting time as we start up seminars that will be teaching the complex art and science of child psychotherapy to thirty psychology intern and practicum trainees. We're proud of the breadth and depth of our training program coordinated by our Assistant Clinical Director Beth Berkowitz, PsyD and Practicum Training Coordinator, Mahima Muralidharan, PsyD. Trainees are an indispensable part of our staff of 80 clinicians who bring a wide range of clinical skills and expertise. We're thrilled with our new facility in Emeryville where we relocated in the spring of 2013. We're still settling in and discovering the potential of the new building. With 29 therapy offices, our clinic is poised for action to help children through psychotherapy, educational therapy, and psycho-educational testing. Read More>> |

Thanks to funding provided by First Five Alameda County/Project LAUNCH, Ann Martin Center piloted and implemented a Classroom-Based Intervention (CBI)
service model at Sobrante Park, Brookfield Village and Markham Elementary Schools. The CBI model provides supportive, preventive and therapeutic services within the classroom to underserved Pre-K through 2nd grade students, many of whom struggle with behavioral and emotional challenges that impede learning and full school participation.
On a once a week basis, Ann Martin Center clinicians provide whole-classroom presentations that teach and reinforce students' social-emotional developmental skills through role playing, story-telling, music, and/or other interactive participatory activities. The goal of CBI is to help students build self-regulation skills, increase social-emotional awareness and communication, develop the capacity for empathy, and improve their overall experience at school by nurturing a culture of safety in the classroom and at school. Furthermore, there is a teacher capacity building component of the CBI model that helps teachers incorporate CBI concepts and activities into their daily curriculum. This collaborative intervention model supports teachers, providing them with additional knowledge and skills to work successfully with challenging students and improve classroom dynamics.

THE LEARNING PROGRAM:
Bolstering Confidence
|
By Betty Peterson, MEd, Learning Program Director
Maria* is a 2nd grade girl who had been diagnosed with a reading disability and speech articulation difficulty. After working with a learning specialist at Ann Martin Center, she began to bloom as a reader.
Her parent noted:
"Maria now chooses to read when she has free time which had previously been her last choice of activities. She has gained so much confidence at school and will read aloud at home, proud of her new skill. She no longer feels shame as a learner and, in fact, will confidently take on a new challenge. Not only has she gained skills as a reader, but she has become more resilient with the ups and downs of learning."

By Evelyn Apte, Former AMC Board President
It seems like both the far distant past and yet just moments ago. I was on the board of the Ann Martin Center from 1986 to 1992, during which I served as vice president and then board president.
This was a period of great change in terms of the Center's direction and personnel. It seemed we were constantly struggling to find our way. In the space of four years, there was a rapid turnover of three executive directors. Once again the position was open and a most unusual applicant presented himself. I was both delighted and a bit apprehensive when one of our clinical staff members, David Theis, applied for the job. My main concern was that we would lose a talented and committed clinician. Also, I pondered whether he was really ready to give up clinical practice for administrative work.
