DONOR HONOR ROLL 2013-2014

We are so grateful to all the individuals, corporations and businesses that supported us through financial and in-kind gifts last year.

Without you we would not be able to do what we do best here at Ann Martin Center: improve the social and emotional well-being as well as academic skills of children and empower the parents who care for them.

Thank you for being a part of our family at Ann Martin Center and walking with us towards bringing wholeness to the lives of our clients and their families.

CORNERSTONE THERAPEUTIC PLAY GROUP

The Cornerstone Therapeutic Play Group at the Ann Martin Center offers intensive therapy for preschoolers and kindergartners in an educational playgroup setting for children 3 to 6 years of age. Up to 4 children participate in a 90-minute playgroup that meets two times per week throughout the year.

Families receive ongoing support and feedback from an experienced child therapist. This program can supplement a regular preschool, daycare, kindergarten, or special education class.

A Message From Our Executive Director

David Theis, DMH
Executive Director

At our annual gala in May, Ann Martin Center celebrated 51 years as a community-supported agency dedicated to reaching underserved families in the East Bay.  The gala was a huge success, raising almost $125,000 thanks to the generosity of many friends, staff, board members, and colleagues.

Our event honorary chair was Marian Nelson, LCSW, former AMC board president, Bay Area psychotherapist, and general shaker & mover.  For those fortunate to know Marian, she is adored for her wonder, warmth, wisdom, and unpredictable wit.

I recently came across a flyer from 1992 describing a class that Marian taught, entitled "From Learning for Love to Love of Learning."

This transformation is an aspiration at Ann Martin Center, i.e., helping children make the developmental shift from learning for love to love of learning...

PEP KICKS OFF TO A GREAT START

By Cristina Benki, PhD

Parent Education Program Coordinator

Participants listening intently as Carrie Lindemuth speaks on executive functioning.

Ann Martin Center's new Parent Education Program (PEP) has been busy in the months of May and June, hosting three different workshops for parent communities across the East Bay.

In early May, Sarah Entine presented her award-winning documentary on how undiagnosed Dyslexia and ADHD impacted three generations of her family. Participants increased their understanding of how such disorders can affect relationships, and were able to share their individual experiences after the screening.

In late May, psychologist Dr. Mary Haake shared her expertise on helping children and teens to manage their chronic anxiety. Parents learned how to make sense of different worries observed in children, how to relate to their child's experience, and were introduced to basic coping strategies.  PEP is proud to announce that Dr. Haake will be returning this July in a 3-part workshop series (July 10, 17, and 24) to offer parents more in-depth tips on parent management of anxiety in children ages 9-18.

"Our therapist has provided both me and my son a safe place to be heard. She has supported my son through a very difficult time by encouraging him to change the things he can, to speak out for himself and to work toward the goals he wants. I love knowing that someone else is ready to support my child during this difficult time in our lives."

MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT ALLENDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

By Denise Jakob, PsyD

Assistant Clinical Director, School-Based Services

"The Allendale Counseling Team does an amazing job serving our most at-risk students. They are able to quickly adapt to emergency situations and can really pull together as a team."
- Charles Miller, Ed.D. Principal, Allendale Elementary

The school based clinical program at Allendale Elementary, our largest EPSDT service provider, successfully completed its fourth year providing on-site therapeutic and consultation services at this vibrant, diverse community school located in East Oakland. The clinical team at Allendale has grown in proportion to the high demand for therapeutic services at the school, and this year's team was larger than it has ever been. The stellar 2013-14 Team included Mickey Marshall, team lead, Ashby Lankford, Linda Hirshfeld, Laura Rainville, new team member, Margaret Boucher, Mary Reyna, 2nd year clinical program trainee, and Robin Abelson, practicum student trainee.

The lively 2013-14 school year began by welcoming its new principal, Dr. Charles Miller, as well as several new teachers and school staff. A major emphasis this year was supporting new and returning staff in building collaborative relationships between school staff, students and their family members/caregivers in order to strengthen the bond between home, community and school in partnership with Dr. Miller and members of the AMC clinical team. Our clinicians worked closely with school staff, coaching them on the use of strength-based intervention strategies that help motivate students to engage in classroom based learning and place value on their belonging to a "classroom community."

ENDINGS AND BEGINNINGS:
TIME TO SAY OUR GOODBYES TO "THE CLASS OF 2012"

By Beth Berkowitz, PsyD
Assistant Clinical Program Director, Training & QA

Trainees at their last seminar together.

Our 2013-2014 training year is coming to a close. Seminars have ended, the halls are quieter on Mondays and Wednesdays- "training days"-and emotions run the gamut from jubilation, to sadness about so many endings and goodbyes, to excitement and apprehension about the future.

While everybody in the Clinical Program feels exhausted at this time of year, "The Class of 2012," our nine graduating trainees, feel especially weary after two years of intensive training and clinical work. Our 2nd Year Trainees have completed: pre-doctoral internships, dissertations, post-masters and post-doctoral fellowships. Many are studying for licensing exams. All are taking their next steps, on their own, as developing professionals. Freedom from training is offset by the weight of ending their special two years together at AMC. They are saying goodbye to one another, to supervisors and teachers, and most importantly to the children and families who have been their clients, many throughout their entire two years with us...

MEET OUR NEWEST BOARD MEMBER!

Dr. John White

I am a clinical psychologist

in private practice working primarily with young adults and couples. I love seeing the positive change people can make in their lives.  I met my wife, Marcia Black, in graduate school.  Yes, that makes us Drs. Black and White!

Most important for us has been raising three children, now young adults.  Interesting that all three are now working in outdoor settings providing adventure learning/ growth for young people at risk.  We didn't exactly plan it this way, but we're delighted how it's turned out so far.  Two of our kids are now in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Marcia and I just returned from a trip with running, hiking, biking, yoga, and rugby -- as spectators, I assure you.

I suppose I found my career in psychology through the inspiration of my grandmother, whom we all called Madam. She had earned an MA in psych herself, served as a missionary in China with my grandfather, and generally lived with great zest for learning and family.  Specifically she was an outspoken advocate for civil rights and integration when that was not popular in the Old South.  It was from her I learned a progressive Christianity, which is very important to me, and at Sunday services I am pleased to feel her near in what is called "the cloud of witnesses."
