Research Study Funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
Dr. Jennifer A. Livingston, senior research scientist at the University at Buffalo Research Institute on Addictions and Alberti Center faculty affiliate, is the principal investigator on a new study being funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

The study, titled Peer Victimization as a Pathway to Adolescent Substance Use, will receive $1,883,110 in funding over the next five years. It will examine links among adolescent peer victimization (i.e., sexual harassment and bullying), psychological distress, hazardous drinking, and substance use. Daily diaries and longitudinal web survey methodologies will be used to assess how these relationships are conditioned by the characteristics of the victimization experience (e.g., frequency and subjective impact) and the individual and social/relational resources of the adolescent (e.g., self-worth, attributions, and social support).

In addition to Dr. Livingston, the study includes the following co-principal investigators:

Supporting The Trevor Project's Talk to Me Campaign

This September (National Suicide Prevention Month), the Alberti Center is proud to partner with The Trevor Project for Talk to Me to raise awareness about what each of us can do to help prevent suicide, especially among youth.

Suicide is a tragedy that affects all of us, and it is preventable. Studies show that when a young person in crisis knows that they have at least one person to turn to for support, they are more likely to ask for help when they need it, and less likely to do something dangerous, like attempt suicide.

With 3 simple words - "Talk to Me" - you can let someone know that you care about them and are willing to listen without judgment. This simple connection isn't just an act of support - it can help save a life.

Learn more about what you can do to prevent suicide in your school or community at TrevorTalkToMe.org.

If you or someone you care about is thinking about suicide,
call the Trevor Lifeline at 866-488-7386. It's free, confidential and there is always someone to talk to.
