Protecting Yourself from Identity Theft

The IRS is working with state revenue officials, tax software providers and tax preparers to continue their effort in fighting identity theft and fraudulent tax return filings. In a report issued by the Government Accountability Office, the IRS estimates it prevented $24.2 billion in fraudulent identity theft refunds in 2013 alone. However, the IRS still paid out $5.8 billion in refunds that they didn't discover were fraudulent until afterwards.

By taking a few simple steps there are ways you can better protect your personal financial data online and at home to decrease your chances of having an identity theft.

Keeping Your Computer Secure and Avoiding Phishing/Malware
  • Keep your computer secure with security software and make sure it updates automatically
  • Use strong passwords - We suggest using at least 10 characters, with combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols
  • Be cautious about links and attachments and only open if you know who sent it and what it is
  • Give personal information only over encrypted websites - look for "https" addresses
  • Check out companies to find out who you are really dealing with
  • Use a pop-up blocker

Protect Personal Information
  • Don't routinely carry your social security card or documents with SSN
  • Keep tax returns and records in lock and key or encrypted if electronic
  • Don't overshare personal information on social media - this helps identity thieves pose as you
  • Check your credit report annually and regularly review your bank accounts
  • Continue to avoid IRS impersonators

What to do if you are a victim?

If you discover you are a victim of identity theft, notify your bank and any other entities in which you have accounts. Contact one of the three major credit bureaus to request a credit report and inform them of your fraud alert. In addition, you can contact your local police department to get help in how to report the cyber-crime.
