It's time to schedule your annual Friends of Scouting presentation. The best time for packs is at the Blue and Gold Banquet and for troops at their winter Court of Honor. Please contact your District Fundraising Chair or District Executive.
Who pays for Scouting? As parents and volunteers, we all know the answer to this question: We do, along with our Scout sons. This is by design. A Scout who helps pay for his Scouting adventure, learns the very important value of self-reliance and 'paying his own way in life'.
To help keep the cost of Scouting affordable for all boys, our Scout Council provides many services including Camp Alaflo maintenance, program equipment and supplies. Again this year, we will conduct the Family Friends of Scouting campaign to raise the funds needed to provide maintenance at Camp Alaflo.

Tufts University Study
| News!
|
Current and former Scouts have always felt that Scouting has made a difference in their lives, and now a study out of Tufts University has found that Scouting does in fact have a measurable, positive impact in the character development of young people. "After three years, Scouts reported significant increases in cheerfulness, helpfulness, kindness, obedience, trustworthiness, and hopeful future expectation," said Dr. Richard M. Lerner, who led the study at Tufts University. "In our control group of non-Scouts, there were no significant increases, and in some cases (e.g., religious reverence) there was an observed decrease, which was quite striking." MBU 2015
| News!
|
On October 24, 2015, more than 200 Scouts and Scouters converged on Troy University's Sartain Hall for the opening of the sixth-annual Merit Badge University (MBU). Sponsored by Troy University and the Alabama-Florida Council, this MBU was held on the beautiful Troy campus, with classes held in various university buildings and lunch served in the Trojan Dining Hall. Scouts completed a total of 180 merit badges, with a total of 28 partials in Cooking and Personal Management. Seven participants earned the Scuba BSA award. This year, we were able to offer Animation as a new-to-MBU class, which was a big hit.
Participants received a patch set for attending, and those registered by October 11th received a Troy MBU t-shirt.
This year, the Merit Badge University coincided with the Ma-Chis Lower Creek Tribe's Annual Festival and Native American Pow Wow. The Ma-Chis tribe invited all Scouts and Scouters to attend and participate in the Pow Wow. A representative of the tribe taught the Indian Lore merit badge class. Troop 123's own Shelby Kirkland participated in the dance competition and placed 3rd.
On behalf of the Alabama-Florida Council, we would like to thank all of the Scouts, Scouters, and other volunteers who made this event a success. It truly takes a village to make an event like this happen. A special "thank you" goes out to Clif Lusk, Scott Carpenter, Lori McCrory, Cheryl Purvis, and Scott Hill for the countless hours they put into the 2015 Merit Badge University.
