Membership Resolution Fireside Chat
| Tuesday, June 25, 2013, 6:30 p.m. First Presbyterian Church of Dothan 3012 West Main St (1 block west of circle) Dothan, AL
At the BSA's National Annual Meeting in May, the voting members of the National Council approved a resolution to remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone. The resolution passed with 61 percent of the vote.
BSA Values - Some have taken this action to mean the BSA has made a fundamental shift in values. This is incorrect. The BSA does not endorse homosexual behavior and believes any sexual conduct, whether homosexual or heterosexual, by youth of Scouting age is contrary to the virtues of Scouting. The Scout Oath begins with duty to God, and the Scout Law ends with a Scout's obligation to be reverent, and that will always remain a core value of the Boy Scouts of America according to National BSA Chief Scout Executive Wayne Brock.
Fact Sheet - There are considerable misinformation and assumptions being made about the policy. We have developed a Membership Resolution Fact Sheet to provide accurate information which is intended to be shared with parents, leaders and charter organizations. We encourage you to review the facts available for download at our council website at www.bsa3.org Religious Organizations Response - The BSA has received statements from community and religious organizations supporting Scouting. Download at www.bsa3.org Opportunity for Discussion - If you would like to discuss or learn more about the policy, please join us for a Fireside Chat on Tuesday, June 25, 6:30pm First Presbyterian Church, 3012 W. Main St. Dothan. The council leadership is also available to meet with you individually or with your unit committee. Please give us a call at the council service center 334.793.7882 or contact our Scout Executive at jerry.freyberg@scouting.org to schedule a meeting.

Bonita Hovey Retires
After 37 years of service to the Alabama-Florida Council, Bonita Hovey retired on May 31, 2013. We were saddened by her departure and yet joyous for her. In Bonita's own words, "You don't work at a place for 37 years unless you love what you do." |
Roy Rhodes, Jr Passing
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Roy Rhodes on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Roy joined this council in 1972 and has been a pillar of the Scouting brotherhood since then. Many youth grew up in the program with Roy serving in some adult leadership capacity, many adults shared their Scouting passions with Roy, and all shall miss his wisdom and fellowship. Roy served most recently with Boy Scout Troop 99, Woodlore Camping School, the Order of the Arrow, the Menawa District Committee, and the Council Executive Board. |
