MCCPTA News and Updates                                             January 2014

Happy New Year!  I hope Winter Break has given each of you a chance to relax, reflect, and re-energize for 2014.

While "selfie" was the word of the year for 2013, "advocacy" is certain to be the word for MCCPTA this year.  Critically needed funding from our county and state governments for our students and schools is only going to materialize if each of us commits to advocacy in the weeks ahead, whether by attending and speaking out at County Council hearings, at one of County Executive Leggett's budget forums, at upcoming candidate forums, or by making a trip to Annapolis with MCCPTA.  Your presence matters.

Our advocacy also will be needed to push state and federal education leaders to waive the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) this year.  We know the MSA no longer aligns with the curriculum our teachers deliver in the classroom; we think these leaders recognize the disconnect too. And if not, who better than each one of us to point it out for them?

And, of course, to advocate most convincingly, we must speak for the vast majority of the parents, teachers, and students in Montgomery County in one, strong, unified voice.  If you're reading this and  you're not yet a PTA or PTSA member, find a school here and check their website for a PTA membership form, fill it out, and send it in.  If you are a PTA or PTSA member or leader, talk to your board and ask what you can do to help engage more parents, staff, and students in PTA at your school.  50,000+ members--and voters--speaks volumes to elected officials.

Annapolis or Bust!

MCCPTA and PTA leaders and members are going on a road trip to Annapolis on Friday January 10, departing at 7:30 AM and returning home by 4 PM. We will travel from the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville and, if there is sufficient demand, from Silver Spring by bus--or you are welcome to drive yourself to Annapolis and meet us there--to spend a day rallying and lobbying for funding for our schools. Bus riders must be PT(S)A members; a donation of $5 per person is requested to defray the cost of transportation.

Let us know if you'll join us by registering HERE; please sign up by this Saturday, January 4, 2013 so we can finalize bus pick-up and drop-off location(s). We will determine final locations for departure/return on Sunday, January 5, and will inform all those registered. Questions?  Email MCCPTA Vice President for Legislation Lynne Harris

Please remember that due to security in the State buildings, ALL ADULTS MUST BRING A PICTURE ID TO ANNAPOLIS.

Push to Waive MSA Testing Gaining Key Supporters
Concerned that federal law is forcing our students to take statewide assessments that no longer align with curriculum, the MCCPTA Board of Directors (BOD), on December 5, 2013, passed a resolution to advocate for the cancellation of MSA exams this school year.  Pursuant to that resolution, the president of MCCPTA sent letters to Maryland State Superintendent Lowery, the Maryland State Board of Education, and the Montgomery County Board of Education, urging their support to have the tests waived in 2014.

Our position is gaining momentum. Two members of the Montgomery County Delegation, Senator Nancy King (District 39) of Montgomery Village and Delegate Eric Luedtke (District 14) of Burtonsville, are drafting emergency legislation to put before the Maryland General Assembly to have the tests waived. MCCPTA will keep our members updated on the status of this effort, and opportunities to share concerns about requiring students to sit for exams that no longer reflect classroom objectives; CLICK HERE to read coverage of our actions and the growing support for canceling the MSA.
Honor a Volunteer or Educator This Year with an Award
Nominations are now open for a range of awards--including annual awards from MCCPTA, MCPS, MSDE, and the Washington Post--for the special volunteers, educators, students, and/or staff members in your community.  Award information can be FOUND HERE on our MCCPTA website; our Awards Toolkit is one of many resources to be found under "Tools" on the menu bar. Don't delay; many award nominations close this month or in early February.
January Delegates Assembly
The next MCCPTA Delegates Assembly (DA) will be held on Tuesday, January 28, starting at 7:30 PM in the Auditorium of the Carver Educational Services Center. The agenda will feature discussion of our proposed Legislative Platform, updates on MCCPTA's advocacy plans and projects, and presentations by the MCCPTA Gifted Child and Outreach Events committees. We also will announce the winner of Membership Challenge #3.
Come early for our MCCPTA Presents! program that evening, featuring Superintendent Joshua P. Starr; this presentation will begin at 6:30 PM.
Urge Your Community Members to be Heard on Bell Times
MCCPTA urges every PTA and PTSA to encourage the members of their school community to share their views on the Superintendent's recommendation on bell times.  MCPS has created a Neighbor-to-Neighbor toolkit to facilitate providing input; CLICK HERE to access this program and resources.

There will be parent, student, and staff surveys; two Bell Times Community forums are coming up at which the members of your community may provide input. The remaining forums are:
  • Monday, January 6: Seneca Valley High School, 19401 Crystal Rock Drive in Germantown
  • Monday, February 10: Montgomery Blair High School, 51 University Blvd., East, in Silver Spring

Each forum will be held 7-8:30pm; free child care (ages 4 and older) and interpretation services will be provided.
