November 2013 Delegates Assembly
Our last Delegates Assembly of 2013 will take place Tuesday, November 26, at 7:30 PM in the Carver Auditorium. Delegates get a break in December so that they can re-energize for the action and advocacy that awaits in the coming year!

Thanks to the many of you who came out to support or to deliver MCCPTA and PTA testimony at Board of Education hearings on the Capital Budget and 2015-2020 CIP last week, and my sincerest gratitude for all you do on behalf of our students and our school communities.

Your work makes a difference. We are building a better future together. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

President, Montgomery County Council of PTAs
Featured Business
At this session, we will introduce our MCCPTA Legislative Platform, consider a position on canceling MSA testing, elect our Nominating Committee, hear presentations on the Greenblatt Teacher-of-the-Year Awards and MCPS Bell Times Outreach Plan, get updated on advocacy work and plans, and announce the winners of Membership Challenge #2.

The legislative platform is coming from the MCCPTA Legislative Committee and the Vice President for Legislation after initial vetting by the MCCPTA Board of Directors. The platform will guide MCCPTA advocacy efforts during the upcoming Maryland General Assembly. Delegates will be asked to share the draft with their PT(S)As, discuss, and, if there are suggestions, provide them to our legislative leaders ahead of the January DA at which a discussion and vote on the platform is expected to be held. Our legislative leaders also will update delegates on trips and events planned to take our priorities to Annapolis.
Honor an Outstanding Educator:
Greenblatt Teacher-of-the-Year Awards

Does a teacher in your school deserve recognition? Nominate her/him for a Marian Greenblatt Excellence Award; there are three awards for experienced teachers and one for a rising star.

Who is eligible for nomination? Teachers who excel in educating students, inspiring teachers, and improving the school; experienced teachers who have taught for at least five years in MCPS; and rising-star teachers who have taught for at most two years.

Dr. Marshal Greenblatt will join us at the start of our Delegates Assembly this month to speak about the awards, and answer any questions, and encourage you to consider honoring an outstanding teacher in your school community!
Encourage Your Community Members' Voices to be Heard on Bell Times
MCCPTA urges every PTA and PTSA to empower their members and school communities to provide input on the Superintendent's recommendation on bell times made in early October.  Dr. Starr's recommendation was based on the findings of the 2013 Bell Times Report, completed in August 2013, by the Bell Times Workgroup; Susan Burkinshaw, MCCPTA treasurer and co-chair of the MCCPTA Health and Safety Committee represented our organization in that work. The report reflects current research, reports from sleep experts, the efforts of other school districts, as well as previous efforts documented in reports published by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in 1998 and 1999.

The MCPS Office of Community Engagement and Partnership will provide a presentation at the Delegaes Assembly on the various ways school community members and PT(S)As can provide input, including Neighbor-to-Neighbor programs.
Delegate Cards...and Blue Books
MCCPTA delegate cards will be required to vote at the November Delegates Assembly (DA). Delegate cards have been sent via the Pony to PTAs and PTSAs at their school for all units for which MCCPTA membership dues for a minimum of 25 members have been received.

And not only was your PTA sent delegate cards, the MCCPTA Blue Book, or directory, including copies for the president, delegates, and principal, along with a revised timeline for PTA leaders, was in that envelope.

Delegates:  Check with your president and treasurer and make sure they sent in dues, received your cards, and get yours. Again, delegates cards will be required to vote starting at this month's meeting; sorry, but there are no exceptions.
MCCPTA Membership Challenge #2
What could your PTA or PTSA do with thirteen (13) $10 gift cards to Silver Diner? A fundraising raffle. Staff appreciation gifts. Drawings at your general membership meetings.  The possibilities are endless!

So, if your unit has grown already by at least 13 members, and you got your dues in to prove it by 11/13/13, you could be one of the lucky winners of Membership Challenge #2.  And if you're not?  Membership Challenge #3 will soon be on its way!
