Thanks to all who turned out last night for our Delegates Assembly, waited patiently to receive Delegate cards, and remembered to bring a can of food (or two) for our MCCPTA Student Involvement Committee-led Food Drive for Manna.
Our gratitude to Superintendent Joshua Starr who hosted the evening's MCCPTA Presents program on Social-Emotional Learning. Thanks as well to Dr. Marshal Greenblatt for joining us to describe the Marian Greenblatt Excellence Awards and urge each PTA/PTSA to work to nominate an outstanding teacher at their school for this honor,

ADVOCACY was the word.
Delegates voted to consider, then debated and passed, the MCCPTA Legislative Platform that will guide advocacy efforts in Annapolis during the upcoming session of the General Assembly. Our key priorities include support for the recently adopted Maintenance of Effort (MOE) law, opposition to General Assembly efforts to legislate required courses, opposition to a change in the current system of electing Board of Education members, and support for State funding of School Resource Officers (SROs) at all high schools.
Interested delegates--and PTA members--were urged to join our Legislative Committee and become part of our MCCPTA Legislative threesome--Vice President for Legislation Larry Edmonds, and Legislative Committee Co-Chairs Lynne Harris and Monica Sanchez--to develop and execute the legislative strategy of MCCPTA and help organize advocacy opportunties this year. Funding for our schools' operating budget, highlighting our MCCPTA priorities, will be a focus of PTA advocacy in the months to come; the Superintendent will announce his proposed FY2014 Operating Budget on December 11. Delegates were urged, if available, to attend the recently announced County Council Budget Forum this Thursday, November 29, 7:30-9 PM at the County Council Building in Rockville. Council support for funding may rest on energetic, visible PTA advocacy for full funding for quality education and opportunity for every child. CLICK HERE for further details and background on the topics expected to be featured in Thursday's forum. The efforts of individual PTA/PTSAs and clusters to promote the Capital Improvements Program (CIP) needs of their communities was applauded. Thanks to generous donations from our MCCPTA sponsor Silver Diner, we were able to award five PTAs/clusters with a total of $150 in gift cards for their outstanding efforts. Even our Membership and Engagement chair highlighted the importance of making parents aware of what PTAs do to advocate for children when working to recruit new members! |

MCCPTA Presents:
Social-Emotional Learning featuring Superintendent Joshua Starr
MCPS Superintendent of Schools Joshua Starr walked parents and students through social-emotional skills and explained how MCPS would continue to integrate social-emotional learning with the academic excellence that has become a hallmark of our school system. Social-emotional competencies are something parents and all adults in our school system can build and work to impart on our kids.
If you were unable to be attend this engaging program, the schedule for rebroadcast on MCPS TV will be posted soon HERE at www.mccpta.org. |
Greenblatt Award Nominations
If your school has an outstanding teacher--or two--now is the time to start considering nominating him or her for the Marian Greenblatt Excellence Awards. Dr. Marshal "Mickey" Greenblatt joined the Delegates at the opening of our session to explain the awards and urged our representatives to work with their principals to put forward the name(s) of an outstanding teacher in their community.
Each year, one of the Greenblatt award winners also is selected as the Montgomery County Teacher of the Year, and moves forward to the Maryland State competition. Just being nominated is an honor. Please have your PTA consider a candidate for a 2012-2013 award.
Further details on the awards, and instructions and deadlines on the nomination process can be found by CLICKING HERE
