Welcome to the April issue of Key Notes - Marketing Keys' monthly newsletter. In this issue, you may know about the prevalence of social media but which platforms do consumers lean on and trust prior to making purchasing decisions? We bring that to light in our feature story. Our goal is for you to be informed and entertained with the latest media and marketing happenings quickly and efficiently.

Social influencers

Who and what do you trust when it comes to making purchases? Research shows that Facebook and YouTube are the most influential in consumer decision-making processes. A social retail technology provider named Collective Bias, reveals that about 19% of consumers are influenced by Facebook, while nearly 18% are influenced by YouTube. Twitter proved to be the least influential, as only 2% of consumers stated that this held the most importance to them.
Consumer trends change continuously at a turbulent rate, making it hard for marketers to keep up. Also, nearly 60% of consumers consult blogs or social media on their mobile devices before making the final purchase decision in store. Ultimately, to keep up with the ever-changing consumer demands, companies must have a solid online presence that offers easy accessibility to all.

McDonald's new recipe?
McDonald's Corporation is currently reworking their branding department. On March 4th, the company filed for a trademark on the phrase "THE SIMPLER THE BETTER". Over the past few months, McDonald's has made a variety of efforts to reduce complexity in both kitchen operations, and drive-thru ordering processes by decreasing menu options. Alternatively, the company has increased complexity by both diversifying their dipping sauce and topping selections and their implementation of the "All Day Breakfast" campaign. A company official shares that McDonald's regularly applies for new trademarks, but could not reveal how they will be using the new phrase.  For now, we will chomp on our French fries and wonder.
Passion+Marketing = P&G

Marc Pritchard, Chief Brand Officer for Procter and Gamble, has always had a passion for technology. Over twenty years ago, he began working on the development of P&G's corporate information technology strategy. Today, he works as the company's chief marketer, and has made it his mission to incorporate digital into ad campaigns.
Pritchard, the mastermind behind the Always #LikeAGirl and Pantene's "Dad-Do" campaigns, believes that successful advertising requires a combination of information and entertainment. He states that digital technology provides more opportunity for creative advertising, which has proven to be the most memorable among consumers.

Radio's final remaining   "Cash Cows"

Terrestrial radio revenues have been on a downward trend over the past several years. 2015 showed a significant decrease in radio revenue on a national level. Alternatively, Chicago's top two earners bucked that trend by showing an increase in earnings. The highest earning Chicago station of 2015 was WBBM-AM/Newsradio 780 & 105.9 (simulcast on WCFS-FM). Their earnings increased by $4.6 million thanks to their right to broadcast the Chicago Cubs 2015 season. WTMX-FM/101.9 The Mix chalked in as the #2 billing station in Chicago due to having Chicago's top morning show duo - Eric & Kathy. Their station appeals to the most advertiser-friendly demographics, increasing their revenue from $30.9M to $31.9M.

Here is the 2015 listing of the Top Billing Stations Nationwide which also includes billing numbers from 2014, formats, markets, and owners.

Put Some Windex on it!

In 2002, Nia Vardalos, the actor and writer of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, single-handedly provided SCJohnson's Windex with one of the funniest promotional taglines in movie advertising history. This year, Windex capitalized off of its notable presence in the movie by sponsoring the film with advertisements promoting the recent release of the movie's sequel - MBFGW 2. The company launched the hashtag #PutSomeWindexOnIt, offered discounted movie ticket opportunities, sponsored Buzzfeed promotions, and hosted a "blue carpet" movie premiere in New York. A Windex spokeswoman stated that there had been a lot of traction with their many creative advertising efforts.
