Welcome to the September issue of Key Notes - Marketing Keys' monthly newsletter. From back-to-school to the start of NFL Football and the eventual falling of the leaves, we wish you nothing but the best as we transition to the most beautiful time of the year. Our goal is for you to be informed and entertained with the latest media and marketing happenings quickly and efficiently.

                       CAUTION:               GUYS THINKING

ESPN Radio Chicago hosted The 10th Annual Fantasy Football League Convention and Draft at the UIC Forum on Saturday, August 22nd. After several years hosting the event at the Horseshoe Casino, ESPN decided to place the event in a downtown location. Over 1,000 participants come out each year, as ESPN makes the claim this is the world's largest of its kind.

The ESPN 1000 hosts emceeing the convention, included special guests NFL Experts John Clayton, Stephania Bell, and Eric Karabell. They were among the national ESPN contingency in town from Bristol, Connecticut and were paired up with local ESPN celebrities Tom Waddle, John Jurcovic along with a host of other experts.

The panel of experts were providing information and analysis for participants to assemble a potential winning fantasy team.

After the information portion of the convention in the morning, the participants broke out into their previously selected 10-team leagues and drafted their own teams for the 2015-16 championship. Teams were then loaded into ESPN.com's Fantasy League site, where they will battle head-to-head for the season. ESPN Chicago's Fantasy Football Convention and Championship consists of 10-team leagues with each team competing against other teams within the league for 13 weeks.

On site, the Hooter girls were a welcome site for many fantasy enthusiasts. (2) actual Hooter Calendar Girls were on-site meeting and signing calendars for the many individuals waiting in line. Also, (2) other beautiful Hooter girls were registering fantasy goers an opportunity to win an ESPN Draft Day Kit, which is the essential kit needed for your league's Draft Day party at Hooters.

"WITH THE #1 PICK,    TEAM _____ SELECTS PEPPERONI."

As people start swapping their summer and fall wardrobes, they also start drafting their fantasy football teams. And as football fans dust off their jerseys from their favorite teams, ESPN Fantasy Football and Pizza Hut announce their new partnership making Pizza Hut the official pizza of ESPN Fantasy Football.

Pizza Hut looks to attract fantasy football fans by offering prizes to ESPN leagues. Each week, a league commissioner will receive a commemorative football, free pizza for the remainder of the season, and gifts to the ESPN Shop and Pizza Hut. One grand-prize winner will be awarded, a ruby-and-diamond championship-style ring featuring the Pizza Hut logo, worth around $10,000. At the conclusion of the season, one person will be named commissioner of the year and will receive a custom ring designed by Josten, a slew of treats like a trip for two to ESPN's headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, two years worth of Pizza Hut pizza, and a $2,500 Amazon gift card.

KARDASHIAN'S POST MAKING FDA SICK

Recently, pregnant Kim Kardashian West posted a photo of herself with a bottle of Diclegis, a prescription morning-sickness medicine, to her millions of followers on Instagram. Her caption encouraged women to ask their doctors about it, noting that the medicine made her feel "a lot better" and "it's been studied and there was no increased risk to the baby."  The Federal Drug Administration countered the Instagram post, warning Duchesnay Inc., maker of the drug, that the post was misleading about the drug's safety because it did not disclose the risks of use, and instructing the company to "immediately cease misbranding."

This situation is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the promotion of various products and services by social media users, especially celebrities. What is projected to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media outlets spreads like wild fire and is extremely accessible, which poses a challenge to federal regulators. Unfortunately, there is nothing regulators can impose on people acting independently; however, when a person acts on behalf of the company, that's when the government gets to step in.

Celebrity endorsers, as outlined by the Federal Trade Commission, must be actual users of the product and disclose if they have any financial arrangement. While Ms. Kardashian stated that she was "partnering" with the company to "raise awareness about treating morning sickness" and included links to the website, the FDA concluded that her disclosure was not enough.

Just recently, Kim Kardashian beat out Beyonce for the most followers on Instagram with over 44 million followers.

NON-PROFITS TO    "PROFIT" FROM        FACEBOOK'S          "DONATE NOW" BUTTON

Last week, Facebook launched a new tool, similar to the "Buy Button," that will help nonprofit organizations reach their fundraising goals. The "Donate Now" button can be directly linked to their Facebook pages and ads placing the opportunity to help right in front of social media users. Organizations, like the American Cancer Society and the ALS Association, have already began using the button to increase traffic to the website and allow users to enter their credit card information via Facebook.

Facebook has become an avenue for users to spread awareness of causes that are near and dear to their hearts. The "Donate Now" button will help nonprofits engage consumers in their conversations by offering a call-to-action.
DOES YOUR TABLET FLIP PAGES?

With a magazines' readership consisting of a mix of print, digital subscription, desktop, mobile and videos, the Association of Magazine Media has found that 26% of total readership comes from smartphones and tablets. Having increased from last year's 18%, it's safe to say that more and more people are reading their magazines where they are most accessible: mobile devices. This trend has had a substantial impact on the readership for some of the most well-known magazine publishers, like ESPN and People whose mobile web traffic made up of almost half and about a third of their total readership, respectively. Here are the top 10 publishers when it comes to mobile readership:

  1. ESPN
  2. People
  3. AllRecipes
  4. Forbes
  5. Time
  6. Entertainment Weekly
  7. Cosmopolitan
  8. Bloomberg Businessweek
  9. New York
  10. Bon Appetit and Epicurious
