Facebook Brings Timeline to Brand Pages
Facebook's Timeline profile has been adopted by consumers since September, but now it is finally available to Brands. The Timeline changes the whole look of a page, introducing a vertically oriented content timeline as well as a widescreen image atop the page

The new features aim to fix marketers' concerns that content posted to Facebook is too quickly lost on a page. Companies can now star posts to feature them on their pages, and pin posts to appear for several days in the Timeline's top left area. Companies can also add "milestones" to their pages, that feature photos and texts related to specific points in a brands history.

Facebook's Timeline feature will be especially beneficial to companies that post a lot of content to their brand's page.  Companies have to remember this new feature will allow consumers to see all of a page's historical content - both positive and negative.  The new pages also feature an admin panel for the page manager to get more insights to their fans including a demographic breakdown of consumers.

Facebook will automatically update to the new format on March 30th, but companies can update today!
Advertisers Flee "The Rush Limbaugh Show" after controversial comments

The conservative and controversial radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has lost at least 21 advertisers since making crass comments directed at a female law student last week.   Limbaugh got the controversy started last Wednesday, February 29 when he called Georgetown University student, Sandra Fluke, a slut and a prostitute on air after she appeared before a congressional committee arguing that her school's health coverage should include birth control.

Companies continue to join the rapidly growing list of businesses that have pulled their advertisements from Limbaugh's show after a social media blitz against the program has been forming on online communities such as Reddit, Twitter and Facebook.  Companies that have already pulled their advertising from Limbaugh's show include AOL, Allstate Insurance, Sleepnumber and Quicken Loans

On Saturday, Limbaugh issued a written statement apologizing for calling Ms. Fluke the offensive names.  He also addressed the withdrawal of advertisers from his program, saying, "Now they've chosen to deny themselves that access. That's a business decision and it's theirs alone to make. They've decided they don't want you or your business anymore. So be it."

Ironically, his ratings may increase because of all the publicity created around this incident, which could in turn create new advertisers.

DVR Usage Represents Growing Chunk of TV

While the proportion of total TV time spent watching live TV has dropped 4.5% from 89% in 2006 to 85% in 2011, DVR usage has grown fivefold from 1.6% to 8% of time during that period. Because of this increased usage of DVR, the total amount of TV content consumed has actually increased in the past year.

Live TV is especially down in the young adult demographic. Data from the Nielsen analysis indicates that during the first 4 weeks of the 2011 broadcast season, 18-34-year-olds spent 79.1% of their total TV time watching live content, down from 82.8% in 2007, and representing the lowest percentage among age groups, behind 35-54-year-olds (86.1%) and those over 55 (92.6%).  One reason for this is that the younger demographic spends much more time consuming media on their mobile devices than older generations.

Other TV Stats

  • According to Nielsen, leading the trend in DVR usage are females 18-54, who allocate almost 10% of their TV viewing time to a DVR.
  • Since 2006, video game console usage has increased from 2.7% to 3.9% of total TV time, fueled by teenagers, who spend almost 11% of their total TV time with a video game console.
  • Data from InMobi indicates that on a global basis, the average mobile web user consumes 7.2 hours of media on a daily basis, with mobile devices taking 27% share of this time (117 minutes), ahead of TV (98 minutes), but behind computers (140 minutes).

The Surge of Mobile Social Networking

Are you reading this e-mail on your mobile device? A new study by comScore report over 62 million Americans use their mobile devices to use social media, more than half of those do so daily. This number is up an incredible 77% from the year before.  The surging numbers correlate directly with smartphone adoption.

The top app that people use on their smartphones is Facebook, with the top activities being checking updates from friends and checking out posts from people they know personally.  The survey found posting status updates was the second most popular activity people were doing on their mobile devices.  Twitter takes a distant second to Facebook in mobile usage.

People are using social media a lot on their mobile devices, but this is the not the reason they are buying smartphones. The comScore study says a phone's social networking abilities was far down the list of factors in purchase decision.  The top factors include network quality of the mobile service provider, the phone's operating system and overall app selection.
