A Teacher's Perspective

By Heather Andberg, ESL Teacher at Lord of Life Lutheran Church's Clifton Campus

One of our young Korean students talked about what the program has become for her. She said that she used to be afraid to speak English but now she is comfortable doing so. The people in her class have become her friends, her "community." Talk about transformation!

A young man from Iran was in a car accident this past December. His car was totaled when he was hit by a drunk driver. At the hospital, he found out he had a broken neck even though he was up and walking around prior to the x-ray. I was talking with him one night when he mentioned that he walks to class. I asked him how long it takes him to walk. He said, "About an hour." And that was when it was so cold out! He said he likes to walk and he enjoys class, especially now that he is somewhat housebound because he still doesn't have a car.

A woman from Egypt is here with her four-year-old child while her husband is still in Switzerland. The family fled from Egypt because they are
Coptic Christians and feared for their lives. One of our teachers sent out an email to find transportation for this woman and her daughter so they could come to class. The woman loves being in class, and her daughter loves coming for the child care offered in the nursery.

We teach amazing people!
