Greetings from ESLIM
Speaking and reading and writing, oh my! Learning English is a challenge that might seem overwhelming. But our students are motivated to improve their skills for a variety of reasons. In this issue, you'll hear from students at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church and see some ideas for incorporating games in the classroom.
Thank you for your interest in ESLIM's mission and for your continued support! |
Student Spotlight
by Kim, Chung, Nguyet, and Sylvia (students at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church)
English class is good. When I came to class the first time, I could not listen. But now I understand. Speaking is very difficult. I want to speak English very well. I am learning English so I can work and make conversation with my neighbors and my future customers. And, pronunciation is so difficult. I want to hear from teachers. Teacher can also tell us what is going on in the news.
Learning English helps me understand more when I watch TV. I want teachers to talk, talk, talk. I don't understand when other people talk. So when teacher talks, it's very good for me. Best if teacher talks, not students talking to each other. We would like to learn more verbs and grammar so we can write correctly. |
A Look Back at 2013
A quick review of 2013 reveals that
- More than 700 English-language learners and 200 volunteers collaborated each semester;
- Approximately 60 volunteers participated in teacher training;
- ESLIM placed 56 new volunteers with its member programs; and
- ESLIM responded to nearly 500 inquiries from prospective students and volunteers.
Thank you to all who shared their gifts and graces to make this possible! |
Teaching Tip: Ten Games for the ESL Classroom
Games are a great way to keep students engaged in a lesson, to review concepts they've learned, and to provide more practice. Check out a list of ten games -- perhaps you'll find some familiar ones and some new ones, too.

About ESLIM
ESLIM's member churches offer low-cost English classes for adult immigrants, taught by volunteers. Students who cannot pay receive scholarships.
To support the efforts of each of the program sites, ESLIM handles a variety of tasks in a centralized way. Its activities include the following:
- Advertising for volunteers
- Placing and training volunteer teachers
- Advertising the class schedule in foreign-language media
- Sending class schedule flyers to local libraries
- Maintaining a voice-mail line in which calls can be returned in English and Spanish
- Producing the Speak Easy e-newsletter three times per year
- Maintaining a website that features the class schedule, a variety of resources for teachers, and information for faith communities considering an ESL ministry
The cost of running ESLIM is normally divided among our member churches in proportion to the student enrollment at each church. However, for three semesters we are placing a "moratorium" on the membership fee so that churches may increase their investments at the local level. We also engage in fundraising efforts to reduce the costs to our member churches. |
