Trying Something New
Each semester, hundreds of adults in Northern Virginia find their way into our ESL classrooms, seeking to improve their English skills. Their enthusiasm and determination can be very humbling. Some of our students don't speak a word of English when they begin taking classes, and learning a language as an adult can be intimidating. Some participants have only lived in the U.S. for a few days or a few weeks, and they are adapting to a new environment--an experience that might feel overwhelming. Some of our students haven't set foot in a classroom for many years. And yet they show up.
At the same time, hundreds of volunteers are willing to try something new by stepping into an ESL classroom. Whether recruited by a friend, connected via a community's volunteer website, or called to respond to an ad in a church bulletin (as in the case of the volunteer featured in this issue), most of ESLIM's volunteers do not have professional training as ESL teachers, although we certainly welcome those who do. Happily, a lack of professional training has not stopped people from getting involved. As someone once said, "Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the Titanic."
It is a joy to witness what happens when eager, risk-taking amateurs meet in an ESL classroom and learn from one another! Thank you for making that possible. |
Volunteer Spotlight: Pastor Alan Felumlee
by Patricia Franck, ESLIM Board Member and ESL Coordinator for the Morning Program at Centreville United Methodist Church
Here at Centreville United Methodist Church we have been blessed with a great group of teacher volunteers. They all have good reasons for volunteering in this mission program. Some are retired teachers, some are trained to teach ESL and want practice, and one of our most surprising volunteers to teach is our Senior Pastor Alan Felumlee. He is a big believer of people of Christ and especially of this church reaching out and helping our neighbors. He regularly encourages people in the service to sign up for at least 3 projects per year. So when he found an article about the need for ESL teachers in the bulletin one Sunday, he said as he prayed during the week, he kept seeing this article:
Wanted: teachers for one day, 2 hours per week for 12 weeks for the ESL program. The dates follow. Curriculum materials would be provided, also training opportunities. Contact Patricia Franck if interested.
As he read, he kept saying, "I think I can do that." He couldn't get it out of his mind. He contacted me, asked me what was available. At the time, the advanced class had no teacher. He said, "Count me in." And he has been there since, about 5 years now. Our students really like having him there.
A blessing he received first hand was seeing all the wonderful things the Sunday school teachers had put up on the walls for the children. (We have our classes in those Sunday school rooms.) He used their themes in his sermons that season. He still regularly includes in his sermons the special joys he has received from getting to know the students he teaches. He reminds the congregation he has no teacher training. I never know what he will show me or tell me about when I go into his classroom to pick up the attendance sheets or bring receipts to students who have purchased the class book. Just last week, he was taking an interesting survey of his class about how they learn best. He was making a graph in different colors for each student line entered for each of the learning abilities (reading, listening, audio/video, and writing). The conversations this generated were really eye opening. Each was learning from and about each other. I would be willing to bet this exercise alone will do the most bonding this class has ever had. When students are lively, much more learning is accomplished.
Pastor Felumlee has truly been a blessing to this program, to me, and to the students he has had. |
A Look Back at 2012
A quick review of ESLIM's activities in 2012 reveals that:
- More than 600 English-language learners and 200 volunteers worked together each semester;
- Approximately 90 volunteers participated in ESLIM's teacher training sessions;
- ESLIM placed 43 new volunteers with its member programs;
- ESLIM responded to more than 400 inquiries from prospective students and volunteers; and
- ESLIM shared its free ESL from A to Z manual with 31 churches and other organizations considering starting an ESL ministry.
Thank you to all who shared their time, talents and resources to make this possible! |
Teaching Tip: Internet Resources
The Internet provides wonderful resources to supplement the curriculum that teachers use in their classroom. One such site is www.esl-galaxy.com, which provides more than 2,300 free, printable worksheets for vocabulary, grammar, crosswords, board games, cloze activities and more.
Another site that features free, downloadable worksheets is www.eslpdf.com. Topics include articles, verb tenses, phrasal verbs, prepositions, adjectives and adverbs, and nouns and pronouns, as well as vocabulary and holidays.
Links to additional resources are posted on the lesson planning page of ESLIM's website. |
About ESLIM
ESLIM's member churches offer low-cost English classes for adult immigrants, taught by volunteers. Students who cannot pay receive scholarships.
To support the efforts of each of the program sites, ESLIM handles a variety of tasks in a centralized way. Its activities include the following:
- Advertising for volunteers
- Placing and training volunteer teachers
- Advertising the class schedule in foreign-language media
- Sending class schedule flyers to local libraries
- Maintaining a voice-mail line in which calls can be returned in English and Spanish
- Producing the Speak Easy e-newsletter three times per year
- Maintaining a website that features the class schedule, a variety of resources for teachers, and information for faith communities considering an ESL ministry
