Celebrating Our Volunteers
What is ESL and Immigrant Ministries' most important resource?  Our volunteers!  Last year more than 350 dedicated volunteers served as teachers, program coordinators, behind-the-scenes volunteers and board members.  Together we provided classes to more than 1800 adult immigrants in Northern Virginia.

In this issue, you can meet one of our veteran volunteers, find out about fantastic online and in-person training opportunities, and learn about the new content on ESLIM's website.

We welcome your ideas for articles and feedback about the e-newsletter; please email office@eslim.org.
Volunteer Spotlight: Judy White

Judy

When Judy White retired from the federal government in 1995, she approached the ESL coordinator at Dulin United Methodist Church to inquire about serving as a teaching assistant.  She had taught high school English a number of years earlier.  And Dulin had started its ESL ministry around 1992 as a project of the United Methodist Women, with a group of retired schoolteachers as the volunteers.

In response to Judy's query, the coordinator said, "I have a better idea.  You could be the coordinator!"  The coordinator needed to step down, and although Judy wanted to teach, she gracefully agreed to coordinate the program so that it would continue.  (In fact, for the first 8 years as coordinator, Judy taught classes, too.)

Serving as a program coordinator has been a learning experience for Judy.  She enjoys interacting with the students, getting to know them, and learning about their lives.  "People have a lot of different customs and cultures but deep inside we're all alike; we want good lives for our children, our families and ourselves."  She also notes, "If you're friendly to people, they will be friendly to you."

Judy has experienced a surprise or two along the way.  This past spring, the end-of-semester party at Dulin coincided with Judy's birthday.  She didn't share that piece of information, but at the end of the party one of the volunteers announced it.  Her students sang "Happy Birthday" to her in Spanish, Korean, Arabic ... "and almost every other language in the world," she laughs.  Then the students continued to serenade her with other songs, too.  "It was the biggest birthday party in my whole life!" she says.

ESLIM Launches New-and-Improved Website

If you haven't checked out ESLIM's website (www.eslim.org) lately, you're in for a surprise!  It has an updated look and lots of new content.

The sections include information about ESLIM, with a newsletter archive, photo gallery, and the ESL from A to Z manual for starting new programs; a list of classes and schedules; information for prospective volunteers, including an online volunteer application form; information for churches considering joining ESLIM; information about how to donate to ESLIM; and news.

Fall Teacher Training
We will have day-long new teacher training on Saturday, August 27 at Crossroads United Methodist Church in Ashburn and on Saturday, September 10 at Dulin United Methodist Church in Falls Church.

Training will be split into morning and afternoon sessions, and teachers can attend an all-day training session or two half-days, with the morning at one location and the afternoon at the other location.  A light lunch will be provided for those who participate in an all-day session.

These sessions would be particularly good for any who have begun teaching in the past couple of years and have not yet attended a training session, as well as new teachers.  Lauren Lang will be our trainer for these sessions.

Our Refresh and Renew training for returning teachers will be held on the afternoon of Sunday, September 11 at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Arlington.  Veteran ESLIM volunteer Doug George will lead the session.

Training is free for new and returning volunteers at ESLIM sites.  Others may participate on a space-available basis for a fee.  Details and registration instructions are posted on the news page of ESLIM's website.
Teacher Training Resources Online

ESLIM is pleased to offer online training resources that you can view at your convenience.  Accessible via the training videos page of ESLIM's website, the eight videos cover topics including lesson-planning, vocabulary, grammar, listening, reading and writing.  Whether you teach at the beginning, intermediate or advanced level, you'll find a video that's right for your class.

ESLIM is grateful to the New American Horizons Foundation, which funded our ESL from A to Z manual, for making these videos available via our website.
